1905年的那一年，爱因斯坦发表了他的相对论，同年这位今年103岁高龄的素食阿嬷
Blanche Mannix出生在加拿大。与一般人不同是，Blanche阿一出生就吃素，因为她有
一位终生吃素的爸爸，而且一直到现在，103岁高龄的她，不曾吃过一块肉。Blanche阿
嬷的父亲因为终生吃素，也活到90多岁。
Blanche阿嬷最自豪的一件事是她一生只去过医院一次，而且在她103岁的生命当中，只
以素食为食。特爱甜食的她，至今却还保有一口好牙齿。32岁时移居到英国的Blanche
阿嬷，目前定居在Bridlington市，如今出门虽然需要仰赖一根拐杖，但并不需要别人

Lake Blanche是Big Cottonwood Canyon南侧最流行的一个trailhead。Lake Blanche附
近其实是三个湖: Lake Blanche, Lake Florence 和 Lake Lillian。对牛人来说，前
面还有Sundial和Domedary两个peak可以上。从Trailhead到Lake Blanche单程3mile，
3000 feet elevation gain，虽说大部分路比较晒，但湖边的景色绝对值回前面的努力。

碰到无数下山的人，这次大家大都带着渔具，看来是到湖里钓鱼去了。

（四）基本功
六月七号的早上，整个课程正式开始。每天的安排都是早上由一个教授做三个小时
的讲座，下午做实验，然后晚上又是一个教授做三小时的讲座。六月七号早上的报告是
主讲老师Blanche Capel做的，主要是介绍小鼠做为实验模型动物的历史，以及小鼠遗
传学的基本知识。这个课程主要涉及小鼠的发育，遗传上的东西谈的比较少，算是一个
不足之处。Blanche的报告比较系统，介绍起来会颇费笔墨，所以我想推迟到以后的连
载中来仔细讨论。首先介绍一下六月七号第一天的实验课所教的一些基本技能。
万事开头难，要想把小鼠实验做好了，需要会一些基本功。首先一个问题是怎么避
免老鼠咬你。按照主讲老师Blanche的说法就是“you have to feel comfortable with
mice before mice feel comfortable with you”。这个说法是很有道理的。实验室
用鼠本来就是从宠物鼠繁殖而来，性情比较温和，只要不去猛烈刺激它，它就不会咬
你。如果处理老鼠的时候有足够信心，动作就不会很笨拙，这样老鼠就不会因为紧张而

region. BTW, I went there as a side trip to my business trip, only needed to
pay for my skiing portion :)
I went there to ski Valle Blanche, but it was closed. So the resort I want
to go the most
is still Chamonix, to ski Valle Blanche. You will have to spend the entire
day ski down the run, a combination of "backcountry" and downhill. That

这个23公里的off piste雪线，前后历时4小时，难度不大，主要是风景， 但是还是需
要有下双黑道的经历，否则一路地势
变化，岩石，峭壁，powder ,冰面，都需要有过类似的经历，会比较顺利。guide 一般
最多带4个人， 我这次只有我一
个， 法国guide Ben不仅滑雪，也攀岩，登山， 所以一路可以说的话题也很多。 当然

（三）五湖四海
《小鼠分子胚胎学》的老师和学生可以说来自五湖四海。主讲老师(instructor)
有两位---UMDNJ的Michael Shen和杜克大学的Blanche Capel。辅讲老师
(co-instructor)也有两位---Stowers的Paul Trainor和北卡的David Threadgill。
Michael 和Blanche在2003~2004是辅讲老师，之后转成主讲，今年则是最后一年执
教这个课。明年就会由Paul和David接班。我博士实验室和Michael 合作过，我还
是他一篇文章的第三作者。前面提过，如果不是因为认识他，我是绝无可能被这
个课录取的。所以我对他是相当感激的。以前虽然合作过，但是我没有见过他。
上了这个课之后才对他有些了解。一开始觉得他有点浮，喝酒之后还会比较疯，
比如跳到桌子上跳舞什么的。但是很快我就发现这老哥在学术上非常牛，分析
问题往往是一针见血。比如metastasis领域还主要停留在用裸鼠xenograft为
研究手段的层次上，Michael则认为这种研究方法完全不对。他的想法和我的
想法可谓是 |

（十一）不请自来的邻居
谈完小鼠的毛色，现在又回到Blanche第一天早上关于小鼠基本知识的讲座。上这
个课之前，我对实验用小鼠的分类和进化历史比较糊涂。经过Blanche的讲座和参考一些
材料之后，才算是清楚了很多。
先丛实验用小鼠的分类说起。实验室用的小鼠学名是Mus Musculus，俗名是house
mouse（家鼠）。如果用界（kingdom）门（phylum）纲（Class）目（order）科（family
）属（genus）种（species）的分类系统。实验室小鼠属于动物界，脊索动物门（
chordata）脊椎动物亚门（vertebrata）哺乳纲（mammalia）啮齿目（rodentia）鼠科（
muridae）家鼠属（mus）家鼠种（M. musculus）。
小鼠和人有着共同的哺乳动物祖先。这种动物出没非常隐秘，长的跟现在的啮齿目
动物差不多，生活在六千五百万年前。那个时期，正好是恐龙称霸地球的时代，可以想像

啤酒基本分Ale和Lager两类。北美市场上ale占20%多，lager 70%上下。
两类区别于发酵和酿制过程的不同。Ale是千年古老的酿制方式，私人作坊就可运作，
其采用上面发酵(top-fermenting)，就是让酵母飘洒在灌里最上层，在暖热温度下，发
酵较快。Lager较现代大规模，酵母放在灌最底层，在凉爽温度下发酵(bottom-
fermenting)，用的时间也就相对长，几个月时间。

深色啤酒多为ale，味重苦口，是因为ale发酵酿造过程中产生的麦芽糖多，为了中和麦
芽糖的甜味，添加的hop多。查了一下，hop是一种中文叫蛇麻的绿色植物，中国还是世
界四大生产国。Ale适合室温喝。帖子里说“very hoppy", 就是苦味重的意思。啤酒类
型(type)按照颜色味道等特质细分为多种具体的style：

披露，中石化已计划为其9、10月份进口的800万桶美国原油寻求关税豁免。
中共8月23日宣布对价值750亿美元的美国进口商品加征报复性关税。其中包括从9月1日
开始，对美国大豆和原油进口加征5%的关税，将对美国牛肉和猪肉加征10%的关税；从
12月15日起对美国小麦、玉米和高粱加征10%的关税等。
这是中方首次将美国产原油纳入加征关税的清单。
路透社8月26日引述两名熟悉情况的消息人士的话称，中共政府上周对包括原油在内的
美国商品征收报复性关税后，中国石油化工股份有限公司（中石化）对其未来几个月进
口到中国的美国石油寻求关税豁免。
据消息人士以及来自分析公司路孚特和Kpler的数据，中石化将于9月和10月在天津港接
卸四艘运载800万桶美国原油的超级油轮。
两名熟悉情况的消息人士称，中方加征关税后将使得每桶美国原油的进口成本增加3美
元。不过，北京已为中国企业提供一个申请关税豁免的管道。
其中一位消息人士透露，该公司还在考虑其它选择，包括把进口的美国原油暂时存储在
保税仓库，或把这些原油运往其它目的地。

seven seats and came within four of winning control. Razor thin defeats in
Colorado and Washington and unexpected thrashings in Nevada and West
Virginia proved us wrong.

Last week's Senate vote to reject the repeal of ObamaCare offered stark
evidence that the so-called moderate Democrats in the Senate will be forced
