As I understand it, the Drive Easy Plan (which has supplanted Real Driver)
is actually a "3rd-Party" product, described as a "Mechanical Failure
Service Contract Plan" in VW's brochure. The fine print states that it's
administered by Fidelity Warranty Services, Inc. of Deerfield Beach, Florida
, which is an after-market provider apparently licensed by VW to provide "
extended warranty" coverage through its dealers.
The good side of this arrangement, if there is one, is that the customer can
have his car serviced at over "5,000 authorized service centers and repair
facilities" around the country, so clearly one is not limited to having work
done at VW dealers. The bad side, I would imagine, is that the customer
would have no leverage in getting Fidelity to actually cover what's promised
in the contract, so you'd end up being no better off than all the
frustrated Warranty Direct/U.S.Fidelis/whatever customers whose sob stories
are all over the internet. What do you think? |
