Genetics of Stem Rust Resistance in Barley

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available for a highly motivated person
to study the genetics of stem rust resistance in barley. Stem rust race
TTKSK (aka isolate Ug99) threatens not only wheat, but also barley on a
global scale. The incumbent will lead a project on mapping loci conferring
race TTKSK resistance in cultivated, landrace, and wild barley accessions
using both biparental and association mapping approaches; developing
molecular markers for efficiently tagging stem rust resistance loci; and
validating molecular markers in breeding populations. The incumbent is also
expected to use genome-wide association scans, bioinformatics, and barley
genome sequence data to identify candidate resistance genes in Hordeum
germplasm. This is an academic professional, 12-month full-time appointment.
The position is available for one year with subsequent years contingent
upon funding and performance.
Minimum Qualifications:
1) Ph.D. in genetics, plant breeding, evolutionary or population genetics,
plant molecular genetics, plant pathology, or related discipline; 2)
demonstrated experience in genetics, molecular marker technology, QTL
analysis, and association mapping; and 3) strong publication record in
refereed journals
Desired Qualifications:
1) expertise in bioinformatics (e.g., programming in C++, Perl, or R); 2)
candidate gene analysis; 3) experience in disease phenotyping; 4) high-
resolution mapping; and 5) excellent oral and written communication skills.
