I can answer this question a little bit, because I did some fuel cell work
before.
1. chemically, in lab, hehe, NaBH4 is the fastest way. one of my group
postdoc ever tried this one as a way for fast start-up fuel cell Hydrogen
maker.
2. synthetic gas, reformed+catalysts, you know, Fuel cell will be polluted
by even 50 ppm CO in pure H2. This way, if somebody wants to drop CO to
several ppm, really difficult.
3. now , some body ever tried use coal reacted with water in special reactor
to get H2

I am really interesting in coal gasifying, which is the only massive fosil
energy source later. And definitely, it will be very practical.

gas should be still very dominant. Even later, gas hydrate may be easily recovered, which can produce large amount of gas

国内的中小型氮肥厂都是用这方法制氢。

NaBH4好像已经被DOE否决了,看到去年的一个报道,如果没记错的话。
中国的情况是CO2已经成为世界第一了,所以不推荐在用化石能源去制氢,包括煤和天
然气
所以前面3条都不可取,
第四种方法不知道怎么样?

Some people now is trying to use ZERO-emit CO2 coal gasifying, this is what I
mean in 3rd. Go to OSU, chemical engineering, Dr.Fan, he and his coworkers
are trying do this. some pre-plant projects have been finished, as i know,
but I am not in OSU,hehe.
