for himself fully or partially) or just a worker working for a PI. On the
other hand, a postdoc could be a PI (although in my university, it is not
allowed for a postdoc to write proposals).
Usually, No institutions could hire you as a PI. PI-ship has to been gained
by competing through proposal writing process.

这个也问得不对，faculty中也有research professor. Research scientist这个名称
在不同的地方有不同的含义。对你来说，最重要的是要申请的那个地方，research
scientist是什么样的位置和待遇。

发帖数: 165 | 7 不用教课，比发考题轻松。如果是在一个研究所，工资也不低，挺好的。唯一的缺点是
不稳定，一般这种职位都是有某个老板雇的(so-called soft money)，完全看这个老板
的经费是否充足，一旦哪一天他的哪一个proposal没拿到钱，你就可能走人。当然你也
可以自己写proposal，做PI，有钱后完全或部分独立， 但是总之不稳定. 早晚还要再
去申请faculty or civil servant。当然也看到有的人一直做research scientist，给
别人干，没有那末累。但也遇到一个５０多岁的，干了１０－２０年了，后来老板钱少
或是更喜欢年轻人，就把他变成part-time，慢慢丢了工作。 if you can't not get
faculty or civil servant position right now, research scientist is a good
choice, better than postdoc. If you are not sure about this position in a
specific institution, j
