else?
2. How likely this can be done within a couple years? what consequence do I
expect if I break the initial appointment contract, say 3 years, for a RAP
position?
3. Side question: how difficulty for RAP to get funding as a PI?

Likely, but very low chance, depending on the availability of the positions.
Better to go to other place competing for a TT position.

No one knows. RAP is usually hired at a yearly basis and the term depends on
the availability of funding.Generally, RAP is similar to a postdoc.
Everything is determined by the boss. The contract may be "at will".
Doable, but still, no one knows about the funding. A lot of TT-APs are
struggling with funding issues.

有的postdoc几年后能成为AP，有的则一直postdoc下去，
所谓的RAP情况也是一样

发帖数: 997 | 7 在比较正规的医学院，RAP比postdoc高两档次。postdoc是fixed term的，promote
一级到instructor, 然后才可以做RAP.
RAP一般要求做过5年postdoc, 显示了独立做research的能力之后才可以申请的。

RAP 看上去比博士后强多了,其实还是 non-faculty, 从RAP 到 TT-AP 的难度其实跟
postdoc 到 TT-AP 差不多. |

someone who promoted to TT-associate professor from research associate
professor in the same department.
There are chances, but you need to get prepared for these chances (e.g.,
teaching experience). At least you may direct your effort towards it if it
is your career goal.

平竞争.我听说过RAP转TTAP的例子,不过是在前几年位置巨多的时候. |

发帖数: 997 | 24 如何定义postdoc? 如果是postdoctoral research fellow, 那research AP
(至少在正规的医学院）显然不是。
如果所有不在tenured/tenture track的PhD都是postdoc的话，那IBM research,
ATT, MSR里面的人都是postdoc，甚至很多Nobel奖获得者也是postdoc.
