a senior one is only 1+1. They suggested me to negotiate at least first
semester teaching free. But I'm not sure the norm, so I ask here...

establishing a successful research program. Just wanted to ensure to have
enough time for research.
I'm not against teaching. I'd be happy to teach more, when the research is
right on the way. Actually, one of the main reason to to go academia is to
teach...

for tenure). 2 courses a year is not bad but is on the high side for a
research-orientated place.

year. If 2 courses a year is what you get after teaching reduction as a new
AP, I think the teaching load is a little high. What is the regular teaching
load of this university?
Also, you need to ask what kind of class you are going to teach, and will
you have TA? A big undergraduate course without TA can be a nightmare.
Developing a new research oriented course can take a lot of your time. |

I heard UCLA engineering has the same teaching load.

I think teaching is an obligation as well as an privilege. Why want to be
totally off?

Although we are in the engineering school of a public university, our
department is a special program. A large part of the department budget comes
from overhead return. Only few old faculty do not having big funding. The
department can't kick them out. Young faculty are under high pressure to get
funding. So there is not such thing as buy-out. If we don't bring in enough
funding, the department will lose money and become very unhappy. I need to
get about $250k per year in average to get tenured.
The bright side is, our teaching load is very light, and the department pays
us 9 month salary out of a general money pool. There is more security than
a 100% soft money position, and teaching 2 courses and getting paid for 9
month is not a bad deal.

paid by state fund, i.e. I only need to pay myself in the summer. But in
reality, if the whole faculty don't bring in enough overhead, the department
won't have enough money to pay all salaries.
Many medical school tenure-track or tenured faculty are on 100% soft money.
Their salary come from their own funding all the time. If they met a low
year and can't pay themselves, the program may or may not step in.
