After spending ~ 4 hours on reviewing ~50 application materials today, I
came to the conclusion that there are some “tricks” you should try to make
the reviewer’s life easier, and hopefully help your profile stand out.
Keep in mind that, in average, each application would be scanned within 5
min or less (it sounds REALLY bad, I know; you have spent hours in preparing
them). But each member of the search committee would most likely have to
review 100+ applications (and NO ONE really loves reading these documents!),
and the first cursory review would most likely filter 100+ application down
to 20 or less. If you believe you are WORTHY and should be in the short
list of 20 applications, please read on.
First, cover Letter is important. A great opportunity to quickly grab the
committee’s attention. Use hold and underline to highlight your research
accomplishments, and what the focus of your future research is.
Second, CV is crucial.
• Please separate first author, from other publications; number
them
• Most recent papers first
• High profile papers first
• Anything worth noting (Award, etc.), using bold or underline (or
different color).
The bottom line: NO ONE WANTS TO READ THE ENTIRE TEXT HEAVY documents! Your
goal is to help them quickly find what they are looking for.

Agree with most of the points. I'm in the middle of screening ~100 faculty
position applications. If I devote 5 min to each application, that's 500
minutes = ~9 hours. I assume many people will spend less time on reading
these apps.
Basically I need to know right away your current position, area of research,
techniques, and key papers and grants. That information is best and quickly
conveyed through the cover letter.
Then a key criterion is publications. For that I need to know your biggest
contribution to the field -- so it's ideal if you have a "key publication"
section listing 2-4 papers. These don't have to be the first author pubs,
but they should be your absolute best. The papers that let me know what you
did and where you will go.
For research plan, there is just no time to read in detail. It is
particularly annoying if the research statement is a wall of text. The ideal
statement for me is one with lots of spacing. Then right off the bat, you
tell me in one sentence what is your overarching question, and in 2-3
statements, tell me specifically what you will do next.
