and laptop since I started to work several years ago. Now, I want to buy a
desktop for my wife. She just needs to access emails and some online movies.
Would you please recommend any brand to buy? Is HP better than Dell? Are
there any other brands more practical?

Go with big name brands, you won't regret much.
Regarding the configuration, try your best bearing with Intel system.
what is main stream?
CPU: we are seeing the transition of intel CPU from the mature core 2 duo
or core 2 quad to the new generation of Core i7 or Core i5;
RAM: 4GB or more DDR2 or DDR3
OS: Windows 7 Home premium or up, 64 bit
HDD: Based on your proposed application, 500GB or up should be adequate
