GPUs expire quite rapidly these days ... 1080 Ti is expected to be launched
in Jan at CES (or even by the end of this year), and Volta will be on the
horizon by GTC 2017 ...
the mini-atx mobo kills this deal. there is only one PCIe x 16 slot on this
motherboard. it is not going to work for serious GPU computing tasks.
you need a motherboard with at least 2 PCI-e x 16 slots, and install two
graphics cards - one dedicated for display (a low-end one), the other
dedicated for computing. Otherwise, if you run kernels on a non-dedicated
GPU (both for display and computing), the driver watchdog will kill the
kernel if it runs longer than 5-10 seconds, unless you change the TdrDelay
value in the registry (if you use windows). If you run Linux, you have to
run it as a "headless" server without connecting any display cables.
Google "cuda launch timed out" or "cuda error 6" to see the issue in details.
Also check out the previous sales (the difference was 8G vs 32G), perhaps
some of them will come back in the next few days

Just wondering, how could you find this PC has only 1 PCIeX16? Coz I saw the
same model is listed at BestBuy as well, the specs on BestBuy says it has 2
PCIe X 16.
The second link you sent looks like a pretty decent computer, waiting to see

click on the 4th photo, magnify, you can only see one PCIex16 and one PCI (
and no M.2). the mobo looks like a micro-ATX. I was also confused seeing 2x
pciex16 in the specs, but I could not find any info regarding the mobo.
for a atx casing and 1000w psu, a micro-atx mobo is a waste. perhaps the
model shown in the photo is not the one being sold? still, make sure you
know what mobo you are buying. that is the most important piece if you
consider upgrading in the future.

强如6核心的i7-6800k,也只支持一个PCI X16。
CPU都不支持2 PCI X16,将来升级也是白费。

what I meant was the number physical slots. you need more than one x16 slot
to support multiple cards, even some of them will become 8x/4x or 1x speed (
despite the x16 interface). but that does not matter if your GPU code is not
memory bound.

其实我们基本不玩游戏,就想买台电脑可以偶尔在Linux下run下deep learning的model
,偶尔再普通coding用用。
现在想想,不行还是来个没那么高端的GPU的电脑吧,否则有点浪费? |

multiple cards are not only good for gaming, but also needed for GPU code
development (in which case, SLI is not necessary)
if you use a single high-end card both for display and computing, you will
find it extremely inconvenient because of the watchdog time limit I
mentioned above. it is also very hard to debug because your screen goes
frozen when you run a heavy-duty kernel (unless the card has dual GPU, like
590).
at work, most my workstations have at least two cards. my desktop has a GTX
1080 (pascal)+590 (fermi)+730 (kepler). I only use one core of the 590 to
drive my monitors. Another machine was set up as a headless sever, running a
Titan X+980Ti. Another one uses a 470 as display and a 980Ti for computing.
All of them run on Ubuntu Linux.

really came down to whether your gpu code is memory-bound or compute-bound.
lower bandwidth only impacts memory-bound programs.
if you need full bandwidth for all cards, you will have to pay big bucks for
mobo like this
