想问问各位，到底做scientist以后career可以如何发展，
是一直sr，staff，principal坐一辈子（当然要是在msr，
ibm的research一直这样做下去也是一个不错的选择），
还是不如早晚有一天要change，比如去别的team做个
manager什么的。
我刚毕业的时候也是跟好多人一样一门心思要做
research，现在也在一个中等公司混个scientist的title，
准备换工作中，求板上大侠赐教。 |

发帖数: 592 | 2 我还没有phd，现在换工作基本上只能本行好换，开发别人觉得
以前工作research多，跟业界不同等等。我们
的头头都是后来转金融了，我觉得有了10／20年的经验以后
职业选择还是比较宽的。

发帖数: 1870 | 3 工业界的所谓research scientist如果不是以pub为主要方向的，无非就是和architect
平行的另外一条career path。
我的理解是，真正的researcher是以publication为主要衡量标准的，作为一个
researcher，要在某个research领域里出名，靠的就是publication，然后被邀请去做
各种conference，journal的committee member。没有pub的所谓research scientist无
非就是一个高级码工。

发帖数: 56 | 4 同意。所以想做research最好去academic或者
top labs （MSR, IBM, ...)，否者其实都是码工，选择也
不用这么纠结了。
从career发展的角度来说，是不是scientist比
engr->architect这条path的选择和机会更少
（比如升职成manager）？

发帖数: 70 | 5 那为啥不叫 senior SDE 而叫 scientist. 我觉得地位还是 scientist 比 SDE 高, 否
则公司为啥要搞区分呢?

好像scientist以后选择不多，而sde 升职或者跳槽选择
的机会更多一些？

I really like some research position but the problem is, just as somebody
told me, a company is a company. Your idea must follow the interest of the
company, so you are forced to work on the specified products. Publications?
In fact, they don't care.
One hr contacted me and she was looking for a senior software engineer. She
said she did like my background. But that was five months ago. I will
graduate next May so cannot go there recently. She asked me to contact when
I graduate. Interesting, I noticed that the position is still open now (OPKO
, miami).
I am confused.... I begin to ask myself: Is there really much difference
between the research scientist and senior engineer? Do I really want the "
dazzling" title?
