n his personal and professional capacities, Dr Sokona participated at many
international negotiations and follow-ups of the Rio process and related
Conventions including Climate Change, Desertification, and Biodiversity. He
is often solicited by various governments in Africa and organizations such
as the World Bank, UNDP, etc., to serve as a Steering Committee Member of
their programs, to conduct program evaluation missions, to chair sessions in
high level conferences, and to contribute scientific papers in the area of
energy, environment and poverty. Throughout his career, he has also had the
privilege to serve in various advisory capacities to many African
governments and organizations.
From May 2013: Special Advisor of the South Centre
The South Centre is an Intergovernmental Organization of Developing
Countries, based in Geneva in Switzerland, intended to meet the need for
analysis of development problems and experience, as well as to provide
intellectual and policy support required by developing countries for
collective and individual action, particularly in the international arena.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Sokona's work focuses on energy, environment and sustainable development
nexus. He has broad experience in Africa in policy development through a
combination of research and analysis, and organizing and leading multi-
stakeholder participation.
The thematic focus of his work covers conceptual as well as practical issues
in sustainable development—including the analysis of energy, climate
change, desertification, land degradation, water management, environment,
institutions, governance, legal systems, and community development. He has
served several national and international public policy institutions.
