身份——此时我只是一名普通旅客。原因其实是，美国海关以为我在美国工作，却并未
持有相关签证。
实际上，那天我是作为一场文学学术会议开幕式上的主旨发言人，正赶去参会，为
此会议举办方还向我支付了酬金。但正因为会议主办方支付了我此次行程的所有开销，
美国海关对我说：“我们有更多问题要问你”。于是我就被带到了一间小屋子，和另外
20几个人一起等了1小时40分钟之后，我又被盘问了15分钟。

那个房间和普通的等候室相似，只是更为阴森恐怖。墙上贴着一张不太明显的告示，警
告大家不能使用手机。在这个房间里，任何违反这条规定的人都被大声训斥：“别用手
机！”房间里的警察态度粗鲁，他们似乎除了训斥不会讲别的话，而且所有人的一举一
动都被严格监视，毫无保留。这个房间里发生的事情真让我做为人类感到羞耻，实在太
可怕了。
那天有一位大约80岁的伊朗老妪，穿着一件淡紫色的小开衫，坐在轮椅上，而美国
海关的工作人员却对她大吼：“阿拉伯语？阿拉伯语？”反复厉声吼叫之后，她终于大
致猜到了对方的意思，这才回答：“波斯语。”我当时就在想，老天，帮帮她吧，作为
伊朗人，她面临怎样的命运？
还有一位台湾(专题)女性，海关大吼着盘问她的收入来源，但她没听懂对方的问题
，于是那个海关官员就冲她大喊：“你的钱从哪儿来的？从树上长出来的吗？还是从天
上掉下来的？”这样的场景太可怕了。
还有一个妇女带着婴儿，然而这个房间既没有盥洗室，也没有饮用水。设想，要在
这个房间待上几小时，胸前捧着一个哭闹的婴儿，或者急需给孩子喂奶，如果是我，我
的天……我绝对承受不了，这个房间散发出的非人道气息，让我心如刀割。
当他们终于叫我去询问时，我正在重读一本40年前自己就读过的小说——谢天谢地
我手边有本小说。书名是司汤达的《红与黑》——这本19世纪的小说适合长途飞行时阅
读，能让人沉浸其中无法自拔——但后果是，我看得太投入，竟然没听到他们叫我的名
字。我前面一个女子回过头说：“他们在叫福克斯”。然而我并不知道应该去哪个小隔
间接受询问，正在犹豫之时，一个全副武装的男人突然出现了，挡在我面前并冲我大吼
：“不是这儿！去那里！”我客气地道了歉，说我因为看书看得太入迷所以没听见自己
的名字，他回答道：“那你想让我干吗？让我在这儿等着你看完小说吗？”——他的声
音洪亮，傲慢无礼，我真得被他吓住了。
他们的问询方式也非常可怕。如果他们看到我手提箱里的书，就会知道一切是多么
具有讽刺意味——我带了一本自己的新书《我也是澳大利亚人》。这本书的主题是移民
(专题)，欢迎人们到另一个欢乐的国度生活。从中可以看出我的一大人生信条：我向来
看重包容性、人性与人类社会的统一性。我的包里还有自己的另一本书《十个小手指和
十个小脚趾》。于是我就跟美国海关讲了我带了些什么书，这些书所表达的包容主义内
涵，而对方却冲我大吼：“你以为我不识字吗！”
对方年纪估计连我的一半都不到——我虽然还没到70岁，但也早就不年轻了——然
而，我全程都是站着回答问题的。质询过程充满火药味，令我胆战心惊，为了安抚我怦
怦乱跳的心，我不得不将右手的手掌捂住胸口。
那些海关人员也没有丝毫歉意。当对方终于得知我的《十个小手指和十个小脚趾》
是澳大利亚政府赠予乔治王子（英国威廉王子与凯特王妃的长子——观察者网注）的官
方礼物之一时，他伸出手对我说：“很高兴认识你，福克斯女士”。问了那么多问题，
他最后的这句话让我接近崩溃，差点晕倒——这种转折实在太诡异了。
我全程客客气气、彬彬有礼，饱受他的诘难，他却竟然说“很高兴”，让我大跌眼
镜——他这般百般刁难，竟然还享受其中，简直变态。
那一刻，我真得很讨厌美国，我讨厌那个国家。其实，那已经是我第117次赴美了
，我也知道大部分美国人都非常慷慨热心，这么多年来，他们都待我很友善。我也知道
，这份恨意过一两天就会淡去，但交朋友绝不是这样子的。要知道，澳大利亚可至始至
终支持着美国人大大小小的战争，而今他们这样对待一个澳大利亚人，实在是太过于忘
恩负义。
那天，我在酒店的房间里气得发抖。我打电话给一位美国朋友，她是个编辑，我在
电话里向她哀嚎，她让我不妨将这段经历写下来——于是我写了两个小时。那晚，我本
来打算睡足8个小时，却只睡了一个半小时就被自己哭醒了——这段经历给我带来了极
大的精神创伤。
我回到澳大利亚后收到了美国大使馆的道歉信，信的内容让我安心许多。同时，我
也接到了许多美国人和美国作家的来信，对我表示安慰与支持。
我能够理解美国海关的工作人员也许并没受到良好的训练，但现在的问题是，他们
在自己的工作场所拥有不可置疑的绝对权力，不管态度多恶劣、多具有攻击性都不用担
心后果。于是他们像发了疯一样。一个公职人员被授予梦寐以求的绝对权力，却没接受
相应的训练，其后果不堪设想。
我能说一口流利、清晰的英语，他们都能让我感到无助、渺小，那么其他不会说英
语的人境遇又会如何呢？我不断地思考，作为一个受过良好教育的、英语为母语的女性
，又是白人，我都会遭受这般待遇，那么其他人种呢，他们又会受到怎样可怕的对待？
这一点让我伤心欲绝。要知道，我被从队伍里拉出来询问，并非因为我是个革命积
极分子——然而，我的天，我觉得我现在已然变成了这样一个革命积极分子。我在自由
、尊严的前线战斗。如果我们不起身大喊，理性将无法取得胜利。因此，我将放声大喊
，为人权怒吼。
这次经历给我带来了巨大的改变，我以前仅仅认为自己是个积极分子，但这次事件
后，我变成了革命主义者。我不能让相似的事件再次发生。自此，我不会坐在沙发上自
艾自怜，相反，我会给政治家写信、给各路人士致电、给报纸投稿、参加电台节目——
我不会再保持沉默，不会再保持被动，我要发出自己的声音。 |

Mem Fox on being detained by US immigration: 'In that moment I loathed
America'
I was pulled out of line in the immigration queue at Los Angeles airport as
I came in to the USA. Not because I was Mem Fox the writer – nobody knew
that – I was just a normal person like anybody else. They thought I was
working in the States and that I had come in on the wrong visa.
I was receiving an honorarium for delivering an opening keynote at a
literacy conference, and because my expenses were being paid, they said: “
You need to answer further questions.” So I was taken into this holding
room with about 20 other people and kept there for an hour and 40 minutes,
and for 15 minutes I was interrogated.
The room was like a waiting room in a hospital but a bit more grim than that
. There was a notice on the wall that was far too small, saying no
cellphones allowed, and anybody who did use a cellphone had someone stand in
front of them and yell: “Don’t use that phone!” Everything was yelled,
and everything was public, and this was the most awful thing, I heard things
happening in that room happening to other people that made me ashamed to be
human.
There was an Iranian woman in a wheelchair, she was about 80, wearing a
little mauve cardigan, and they were yelling at her – “Arabic? Arabic?”.
They screamed at her “ARABIC?” at the top of their voices, and finally she
intuited what they wanted and I heard her say “Farsi”. And I thought
heaven help her, she’s Iranian, what’s going to happen?
There was a woman from Taiwan, being yelled at about at about how she made
her money, but she didn’t understand the question. The officer was yelling
at her: “Where does your money come from, does it grow on trees? Does it
fall from the sky?” It was awful.
There was no toilet, no water, and there was this woman with a baby. If I
had been holed up in that room with a pouch on my chest, and a baby crying,
or needing to be fed, oh God … the agony I was surrounded by in that room
was like a razor blade across my heart.
When I was called to be interviewed I was rereading a novel from 40 years
ago – thank God I had a novel. It was The Red and the Black by Stendhal –
a 19th century novel keeps you quiet on a long flight, and is great in a
crisis – and I was buried in it and didn’t hear my name called. And a
woman in front of me said: “They are calling for Fox.” I didn’t know
which booth to go to, then suddenly there was a man in front of me, heaving
with weaponry, standing with his legs apart yelling: “No, not there, here!
” I apologised politely and said I’d been buried in my book and he said:
“What do you expect me to do, stand here while you finish it?” – very
loudly and with shocking insolence.
The way I was interviewed was monstrous. If only they had been able to look
into my suitcase and see my books. The irony! I had a copy of my new book I
’m Australian, Too – it’s about immigration and welcoming people to live
in a happy country. I am all about inclusivity, humanity and the oneness of
the humans of the world; it’s the theme of my life. I also had a copy of my
book Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes. I told him I had all these
inclusive books of mine in my bag, and he yelled at me: “I can read!”
He was less than half my age – I don’t look 70 but I don’t look 60 either
, I’m an older woman – and I was standing the whole time. The belligerence
and violence of it was really terrifying. I had to hold the heel of my
right hand to my heart to stop it beating so hard.
They were not apologetic at any point. When they discovered that one of
Australia’s official gifts to Prince George was Ten Little Fingers and Ten
Little Toes, he held out his hand and said: “It’s been a pleasure to meet
you, Ms Fox.” I was close to collapse, very close to fainting, and this
nearly broke me – it was the creepiest thing of all.
I had been upright, dignified, cool and polite, and this was so cruelly
unexpected, so appalling, that he should say it was a pleasure. It couldn’t
have been a pleasure for him to treat me like that, unless he was a
psychopath.
In that moment I loathed America. I loathed the entire country. And it was
my 117th visit to the country so I know that most people are very generous
and warm-hearted. They have been wonderful to me over the years. I got over
that hatred within a day or two. But this is not the way to win friends, to
do this to someone who is Australian when we have supported them in every
damn war. It’s absolutely outrageous.
Later in the hotel room I was shaking like a leaf. I rang my friend, my
American editor and bawled and bawled, and she told me to write it all down,
and I wrote for two hours. I fell asleep thinking I would sleep for eight
hours but I woke up an hour and a half later just sobbing. I had been
sobbing in my sleep. It was very traumatic.
After I got back to Australia I had an apology from the American embassy. I
was very impressed, they were very comforting, and I’ve had so many
messages of support from Americans and American authors.
I am a human being, so I do understand that these people might not be well-
trained, but they now have carte blanche to be as horrible and belligerent
as they want. They’ve gone mad – they’ve got all the power that they want
but they don’t have the training.
They made me feel like such a crushed, mashed, hopeless old lady and I am a
feisty, strong, articulated English speaker. I kept thinking that if this
were happening to me, a person who is white, articulate, educated and fluent
in English, what on earth is happening to people who don’t have my power?
That’s the heartbreak of it. Remember, I wasn’t pulled out because I’m
some kind of revolutionary activist, but my God, I am now. I am on the
frontline. If we don’t stand up and shout, good sense and good will not
prevail, and my voice will be one of the loudest.
That’s what it has taught me. I thought I was an activist before, but this
has turned me into a revolutionary. I’m not letting it happen here. Instead
of crying and being sad and sitting on a couch, I am going to write to
politicians. I am going to call. I am going to write to newspapers. I am
going to get on the radio. I will not be quiet. No more passive behaviour.

负责的从事执法工作，这种事情全世界都不存在。

险柜服务。前段时间重点打击的就是清理中国城的保险柜业务，个个大行都用翻修为理

depdent一样的道理。
Definition of Exempt Individual
Foreign Government Related Individual
Employee of Foreign Government
Employee of International Organization
Usually on A or G visa;
Teacher, Professor, Trainee, Researcher on J or Q visa;
Does NOT include students on J or Q visas;
Does include any alien on a J or Q visa who is not a student (
physicians, au pairs, summer camp workers, etc.);
must wait 2 years before counting 183 days; however if the J or Q
alien has been present in the U.S. during any part of 2 of the prior 6
calendar years in F, J, M, or Q status, then he is not an exempt individual
for the current year, and he must count days in the current year toward the
substantial presence test;
Quality of being an Exempt Individual applies also to spouse and
child on J-2 or Q-3 visa;
Student on F, J, M or Q visa;
must wait 5 calendar years before counting 183 days;
the 5 calendar years need not be consecutive; and once a cumulative
total of 5 calendar years is reached during the student’s lifetime after
1984 he may never be an exempt individual as a student ever again during his
lifetime;
Quality of being an Exempt Individual applies also to spouse and
child on F-2, J-2, M-2, or Q-3 visa;
Professional athlete temporarily present in United States to compete in
a CHARITABLE sports event.
