亚拉湖向西南延伸至坦桑尼亚南端的马拉维湖。西支裂谷出阿巴亚湖后，经蒙博托湖、
爱德华湖、基伍湖、坦噶尼喀湖、鲁夸湖，呈弧形入马拉维湖。至此，一度分开的大裂
谷又重归一处，并继续向南延伸，经希雷河达赞比亚河河口入印度洋消失。
东非裂谷带地形复杂，千姿百态。有时高峰矗立，层峦叠嶂；有时峡谷含幽，湖光秀美
。裂谷带火山林立，多姿多彩。在众多的火山中有数百年不曾活动的死火山，也有本世
纪还曾爆发过的活火山。其中最为著名的有乞力马扎罗山和位于肯尼亚境内的肯尼亚火
山。坦桑尼亚境内的梅鲁火山是一座活火山，曾于1953年爆发过。这里最为壮观的活火
山应数位于基伍湖以北的尼腊贡戈火山。这座火山海拔只有3700米，但火山上空终年笼
罩着浓烟，方圆几十里都可闻刺鼻的硫磺气味，火山口里有一个充满高温熔岩的岩浆湖
，湖中岩浆红如钢水，时而热浪翻滚，火光冲天，时而轰鸣大作，响彻云霄，真可谓为
世上少有的奇观。
东非大裂谷几乎跨越了东部非洲所有的国家，其中以在埃塞俄比亚境内为最长。其实东

以人们将其称为地球最大的伤疤。埃塞俄比亚境内的裂谷带湖泊相对较少，而且较小，
但因埃塞俄比亚高原地势较南部的裂谷带要高，所以裂谷并不比南部的多湖地带浅。有
