Incidents of identity theft are rising at an alarming rate across
the country as more people use their personal information to perform
transactions over the Internet. That increase reflects what's happening
nationally. Calls to the Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft
Hotline (1-877-IDTHEFT) tripled in 2000, officials say. The hotline,
set up November 1999, is getting well over 1,000 calls a week.
