Former Apple CEO John Sculley is back with smartphones for emerging markets.
Obi Worldphone this week introduced two affordable smartphones, set for
launch in developing areas of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, where young
consumers don't have a lot of cash to burn.
The sub-$200 SF1 (above) and SJ1.5 handsets will hit brick-and-mortar and
online retailers in October, with Qualcomm and MediaTek processors, a Sony
camera, Corning Gorilla Glass, and Dolby sound.
Obi's flagship SF1 sports a 5-inch 1,920-by-1,080 display with 443ppi. It
runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and Android Lollipop, sports a 13-
megapixel camera, and promises quick-charge technology that can juice up a
phone in less than three hours.
Obi SJ1.5"With Obi we set out to create beautiful, original smartphones that
go beyond consumers' expectations," said Robert Brunner, founder of
Ammunition, which designed the phones. "We've obsessed over every detail of
the Obi experience—from industrial design, user interface and packaging—to
deliver inspiring products that overturn the misconception that great
design has to come at a high price."
Named for its city of origin—San Francisco—the base SF1 model comes with
2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory for $199; a $249 model bumps those
specs to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
The SJ1.5, meanwhile, is a 3G smartphone powered by the MediaTek MT6580 quad
-core processor. Its 5-inch 1,280-by-720 display is made from 2.5D curved
glass and surrounded by a colorful case.
Carrying the initials of Silicon Valley's other major city—San Jose—the
SJ1.5 comes with a $129 price tag, which includes 16GB of internal storage
and a card slot for memory expansion, as well as front and rear cameras and
Android Lollipop.
"Obi has taken the best of Silicon Valley—innovations in design, state-of-
the-art technology and high standards for manufacturing—and fused them into
beautiful, powerful tools at attractive prices," Sculley said in a
statement. "Our efficient cost structure and broad distribution combine to
present empowering tools that help our customers achieve their aspirations." | j**u
