I know this is a bit of an old thread but I have an Obi200 and can confirm
that the T.38 fax relay in the Obi makes faxing (both send and receive) much
more reliable, even when using Google Voice. The baud rate should not be
set beyond 14,000 bps. From my dozens of use, I would say that the Obi200
has a 97% success rate compared to a landline transmission.
The pro is that it will push through the fax. The con is that depending on
the quality of the connection (especially via GV), you may not have 100% of
the page transmission. For example, you may get a streak through a sentence
of the page, etc. Still readable, but for business documents that require
more professionalism, faxing through GV may be problematic sometimes. You
should know that faxing through a normal line, whether land or more quality
VoIP number/connection, the fax transmission will be excellent. Still, not
bad for faxing via GV with the Obi200.
My grading of fax for quality (based on a good landline or VoIP connection):
Landline (99.9%); G.711 fax transfer (98%); T.38 fax relay (99%) (however,
T.38 with GV, that number drops to 97%).
As for landline or G.711 fax transfer with GV, not good, less than 50%.
So all in all, if you want to fax with GV, Obi's T.38 will give you the best
consistency, given the noisy nature of a GV connection. When I say noisy,
it doesn't mean that you will hear the noise but the connection is such that
it is noisy for fax transmission and if you tried to fax with a landline or
other VoIP connections using GV, you will find problems with the
transmission. I definitely recommend the Obi200 series for faxing with GV--
as long as you understand it is not perfect.
