Child Psychiatrist Testifies California Bill SB 48 Harms Kids
How would you feel if you were told that your child would be taught about
LGBT issues as early as kindergarten? That is exactly what California Bill
SB 48 is trying to accomplish. Bill SB 48 "would require all public schools
and all textbooks to portray homosexuality and transgenderism/cross-dressing
in a positive light‚ and include figures and events in 'gay history'.
"
Dr. Miriam Grossman, a board certified child, adolescent, and adult
psychiatrist who has been in practice for 21 years, recently testified
before California State Senate Education Committee on this issue. Grossman
lectures internationally and works first-hand with children with homosexual
and transgender feelings and has also written three books on reproductive
health, which proves she has extensive knowledge in this area.
After reviewing Bill SB 48, Dr. Grossman concluded that the bill is "based
on seriously flawed thinking" and she has "deep concerns about the
consequences to the children of this state, should this bill become law".
The following are three very strong points and questions that Dr. Grossman
directs to the Senate Committee that show just how serious of an issue this
is:
- "Children process and integrate information and experiences differently
than adults. This bill mandates the introduction of ideas into the classroom
without considering the capacity of students to grasp and absorb these
ideas. These are difficult concepts for adults to comprehend, let alone
children."
- "If we are going to do this supposedly in an age-appropriate way, please
tell me, how does one explain to 1st graders, 2nd graders, 3rd graders, in
an age-appropriate way, the idea of a person coming to a Doctor and asking
for very critical body parts to be removed? There is no age appropriate way
that that can be done."
- "This bill propels us into uncharted territory and our children will pay
the price. A child is not a miniature adult. It is our responsibility to
protect children as best we can from exposure to facts and experiences that
they are not equipped to handle."
Despite Dr. Grossman’s plea for the Senate Committee to vote against Bill
SB 48, they chose to ignore her advice and passed the bill, which will next
be debated by the full California Senate.
