I-405 Express Toll Lanes – coming in 2015
The I-405 express toll lanes between Bellevue and Lynnwood, set to open
later this year, will help ease traffic on one of the state’s most
congested corridors. Express toll lanes will give I-405 drivers a choice to
travel faster by paying a toll. Transit, vanpools and carpools meeting the
occupancy requirement will be able to use the lanes toll free. Toll rates
will adjust to keep traffic moving 45 mph or faster in the express toll lane
, similar to the SR 167 HOT lanes between Renton and Auburn.
WSDOT is building a new lane adjacent to the carpool lane between Northeast
6th Street in Bellevue and SR 522 in Bothell to create a dual, express-toll-
lane system and converting the existing carpool lane between Bothell and
Lynnwood into a single, express toll lane. The regular lanes on I-405 will
remain free.
Transportation Commission requests public input on I-405 toll rates and
carpool exemptions
While WSDOT gets ready to start its educational outreach on I-405 express
toll lanes, next week the Washington State Transportation Commission will
begin its public process to make decisions on minimum and maximum toll rates
and carpool exemptions.
The I-405 express toll lanes will have a dynamic toll rate, meaning that the
rate will change based on traffic volumes. The commission is proposing a
range of 75 cents for the minimum toll and $10 for the maximum toll for this
17-mile system.
The commission is also proposing that carpools must have three or more
people to be exempt from paying a toll during peak periods (weekdays from 5
a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.), and carpools with two or more people
will be exempt during off-peak periods.

For all meetings (except the virtual meeting), an open house will be held
from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. where you can learn more about the project. The
public meeting will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. where you can learn more
about the toll rate proposal and offer comments.
