Beginning November 29, 2016, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will require People’s Republic of China
Passport holders who have 10-year tourist and business visas to input their
information (name, birth date, employment, etc.) in an online platform
before traveling to the United States. This online platform is called
the Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS).
Although EVUS enrollment is not a requirement for U.S. citizens, as a U.S.
citizen residing in China, we recognize that you may receive questions from
relatives, colleagues, and friends about EVUS, and we want to ensure that
you have accurate and complete information to share. Below please find
critical information summarizing the EVUS program. For more
information, please also visit www.cbp.gov/EVUS.
What is EVUS?
Background: In November 2014, the United States and China entered into a
historic agreement to issue visitor and business travel visas (B1/B2, B1,
and B2) with 10-year validity. That same agreement recognized that travelers
would be required to periodically complete an online form updating their
personal information. Enrollment in this system, called EVUS, will
become mandatory for these travelers beginning November 29, 2016.
Requirements: Individuals with a passport issued by the People’s Republic
of China and bearing a maximum validity (10-year), B1 (visitor for business)
, B2 (visitor for pleasure), or combination B1/B2 visa will be required to
complete an EVUS enrollment at www.EVUS.gov prior to traveling to the
United States. An enrollment is generally valid for two years or until the
traveler’s visa or passport expires, whichever comes first.
Key Facts:
How much does EVUS cost? CBP is not collecting a fee for an EVUS
enrollment at this time. CBP anticipates an EVUS enrollment fee will
eventually be implemented, but there is currently no time frame for when the
fee will be imposed. Until the fee is implemented, travelers can complete
their EVUS enrollment without charge.
How do travelers enroll? Can someone enroll on their behalf?
Enrollments can be submitted at www.EVUS.gov.Each EVUS enrollment requires
the traveler to provide his or her name, birth date, emergency contact,
passport information, and biographical and employment information. Travelers
also must answer questions related to travel eligibility. A third party
such as a friend, relative, or travel industry professional may submit the
required information. The traveler is responsible for the truthfulness and
accuracy of all information submitted on his or her behalf.
How long will it take to enroll? What does the traveler need to
complete an enrollment? For most travelers it will take 10-15 minutes
to answer the questions and verify the information. After travelers
submit their information, most responses will return within minutes, but
some may take up to 72 hours. CBP encourages travelers to enroll in EVUS
when they begin planning their trip to the United States to avoid
uncertainties as CBP cannot guarantee a maximum processing time. In order to
successfully load the EVUS website, those completing an EVUS enrollment
should make sure that the latest version of their internet browser is
installed on their computer or mobile device (phone or tablet). The
internet browser must support 128-bit encryption, be able to accept cookies,
and be JavaScript enabled. Enrollees must have their passport and
their visa, as well as an emergency contact’s information in the United
States.
When do travelers have to enroll? All Chinese nationals holding a 10-year B1
/B2, B1 and B2 visa in a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China
who plan to travel to the United States on or after November 29 must have a
valid EVUS enrollment.Those traveling by air will not be permitted to board
their flight without a successful EVUS enrollment. If arriving at a land or
sea port of entry, the traveler will be required to have a valid EVUS
enrollment before being admitted to the United States.
What if my friend, co-worker, family member, or acquaintance needs help with
an enrollment? For assistance with an EVUS enrollment, please visit
CBP’s informational website at www.cbp.gov/EVUS or call the EVUS Call
Center at 1-202-325-0180. Except for U.S. federal holidays, the Call Center
is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is staffed with Mandarin speaking
operators. You may also contact the Call Center by email at [email protected]/* */
dhs.gov. Although Call Center is available to available to answer questions
travelers might have regarding EVUS, all EVUS enrollments must be submitted
online by a travelers or a third party.
Don’t Delay, Enroll Today! Not enrolling in EVUS before departing for
the United States may delay a traveler’s travel plans. CBP strongly
encourages all People’s Republic of China passport holders with 10-year
visas to enroll now at www.EVUS.gov. For more information about
