juices containing larger amounts of sugar
From the AP via The Detroit News: Flavored milk no longer a choice in L.A.
schools
The Los Angeles Unified School District is taking a stand against child
obesity, becoming the nation's largest school system to stop serving sugar-
laden flavored milk.
The school board on Tuesday voted to eliminate chocolate and strawberry milk
from schools as of July 1.
It will do nothing because they will continue to serve other drinks that are
even more sugar-laden than flavored milk, like fruit juices that are
essentially 100% sugar in the nutritional sense. Worse yet, kids will drink
less milk which contains some of the highest quality protein known to man.
They will simply replace those calories with something else that is not
protein, like carbohydrates. Even worse yet, the blood sugar spike in
flavored milk is far less than what kids get from fruit juices because the
protein and fat in milk (I'm no fan of fat free) delays the absorption rate
of the sugar. So onto the absurdity of this decision to drift away from the
core mission of education to playing nanny, and not very well at that:
...the district serves fruit juices containing 27 to 29 grams of sugar per
serving, more than the amount of sugar in flavored milk — 20 grams in 8
ounces of fat-free chocolate milk and 27 grams in fat-free strawberry.
Plus, a total ignorance of science:
Some school districts have opted for a middle road, using natural sweeteners
like cane sugar, beet sugar and Truvia to sweeten milks instead of high-
fructose corn syrup based flavorings.
Cane sugar and beat sugar are both composed of two things: fructose and
glucose. Glucose goes right into the bloodstream for metabolism while
fructose goes to the liver to be converted. High fructose corn syrup? It has
two components as well: fructose and glucose in about the same proportion.
So you can clearly see how going from HFCS to cane sugar will help... |
