The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released its final estimate for first-
quarter GDP growth in the U.S. this morning, showing real gross domestic
product contracted at a faster-than-expected rate of 1.6%, compared to
earlier estimates of a 1.5% contraction.
The quarterly decline in GDP marks the first contraction since the second
quarter of 2020, when the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns
plunged the economy into a recession.
Rising Trade Deficit, Declining Consumer Spending
The downward revision was mainly due to a larger-than-expected trade deficit
, as imports surged 18.9% in the first quarter, compared to 18.3% in the
previous estimate. Meanwhile, consumer spending growth was revised lower as
an increase in spending on services was offset by a decline in expenditures
on goods, particularly groceries and gasoline. Consumer demand has been
under pressure as a result of surging inflation, particularly for prices of
