发帖数: 91 | 4 我是本科（大家眼中的top2）过来的，现在在big 10 land grant university里面的一
所经济系读博士。这个学校工科很强（估计已经猜到了），但社科一般。我们系主要是微观
理论不错，其他的都慢慢不行了，特别是宏观已经没人了。而且没有quals，核心课程要上3个学
期，所以毕业的时间相当长。而且靠分数来screen，所以老师给分都蛮紧的，学习就跟本科一样，
fully care grades。无论是就业还是兴趣出发，我觉得商学院都更适合我。当年也是申请了几所
商学院的管理方向，无一例外地都把我拒了。当然，admission committee还是火眼金睛的。在
Phd一年之后，发现一年之前实在是太幼稚了，我觉得当年审我材料的人应该会窃笑。
个人原因加上兴趣，我一直有转学的打算。但与Finance的人上了不少课之后，我实在
是不明白Bschool是怎么录人的。因为合上了三四门课，确实没发现金融系的博士学术上很强，
从数理还是直觉上来说。实在是不明白商学院是怎么选人的。当然他们阅历确实比较丰富，不少有两
个master(MA+M. Eng)，也许是diversity?

据WallStreetJournal(see the attached link)由王锦山校友发明的ATRP赫然列为2009
年化学诺奖的5个夺标热门之一。问题是CMU的老马一手遮天，使得大部分报道只提他一
人。事实是王因该是inventor而马只不过是co-inventor。If we let the matter go,
it is possible Wang will not be mentioned let alone a share of this grand
prize. Unfortunately, there is no such a thing as "review" in Nobel Prize as
in NFL so I urge you to share your idea as how |

Got an email from a lovely person passing on the Thomson Reuters pick(s).
They seem to agree that Grätzel has one coming and I’ve been feeling
that way myself. They also have picked Benjamin List for his work using
asymmetric catalysts and Barton/Giese/Schuster for electron transfer in DNA.

最近看了Dice帖子，讨论有机新生代的牛人，觉得挺有意思，但也有点意犹未尽。
现在响应他的号召，新开贴，系统地介绍有机化学的新生力量。
上个世纪90是年代独立工作的人，通过十几年左右的打拼，很多都已经功成名就，
成为人名教授了，像Greg Fu，MacMillan，List， Scott Miller， John Hartwig，
Amir Hoveyda，Erik Sorensen等等。现在有一批2000以后独立工作的人开始崭露头角
，渐渐被人们熟知，有机化学的江湖以后就是他们的天下，感觉现在有机到了更新换代
的时候了。
这个帖子的目的是系统地介绍2000（特别是2004年，如果是中国人则会放宽年限）
以后独立工作的有机领域的新生力量，旨在展现现在有机的前沿，年轻人的chemistry
代表着化学的未来。这些人有的刚刚拿到tenure，有的还为tenure苦苦打拼，从他们的
文章中，看到了努力，也看到了执着。从本帖开始，将以回复的形式，介绍当今有机化
学活跃的年轻人，希望从中能看到有机化学的未来。

系，电面，onsite，call to follow up时又最后临门一脚，发挥了点我youtube上学的
close的技巧，于是offer，在我论文写完了一大半的时候就来了。我当天就从了。
拿到offer以后，我对系里的事就再也不关心(care)了。不过还是有些事情可以写写。
组里又来了新的师弟师妹，老板让一个胖乎乎的小姑娘做的是：拓展一下asymmetric
epoxidation的substrate scope，也就是我五年前最开始做的事情。小姑娘看得出做得
很积极，周周汇报又试了什么，什么ee，让后还要试什么。。。（美国白人，不愁活路）
还有，隔壁Cain教授踢人了。因为这个学生在手套室里打翻了药瓶。。。我觉得这个原
因听着荒谬，但没人知道更合乎逻辑的理由。虽然大家暗地里说Cain教授的RP略有微暇
（不文明的话就不入文字了），我还是不明白他为什么要对自己的开门弟子如此呢，都
四五年级了。有人说这个学生哭着找到我老板Steve，希望他做为系主任能说说情。据
