Exodus International

One Nation Under God

(Alan Chambers)

NET bible
47 tn The verb form used here is אֶהְיֶ&
#1492; (’ehyeh), the Qal imperfect, first person common singular, of the
verb הָיָה (haya, “to be”). It forms an
excellent paronomasia with the name. So when God used the verb to express
his name, he used this form saying, “I am.” When his people refer to him
as Yahweh, which is the third person masculine singular form of the same
verb, they say “he ...

Ex. 4:21
The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is referred to throughout chs. 4–14 with
the implication that Pharaoh is answerable for his own actions (e.g., 8:15)
.
However, the Lord states here that it is his sovereign hand that ultimately
governs the events.

God gave Moses a preview of all that would take place in his dealings with
Pharaoh (vv. 21-23). When God said He would harden Pharaoh’s heart (v. 21),
He was not saying that Pharaoh would be unable to choose whether he would
release the Israelites. God made Pharaoh’s heart progressively harder as
the king chose to disobey God’s will (cf. Lev. 26:23-24).
