i dealt w/ a similar situation last year.
a lady backed into my parents' car; what made it tricky for us was that:
1) she was being a bully, kept on claiming it was my parents that ram into
her.
2) the police wouldn't assign fault as it happened in a private parking lot
3) parents english is limited
4) parents' car's insurance was liability only, which means the company only
get involved when it's my folk's fault

folk I had enough fun explaining torque is not a unit of work to a self
claimed science/eng folk. Don't get me started again.

i think technically regular grant is harder since all junior and senior
folks compete together. lots of fellows, NAEs are in this pool.
but career awardees got a lot of hypes and publicity. quite a few sr folks
said (to others) that they couldn't believe i didn't get career since they
thought i wrote good proposals and papers. i know politics play. i didn't
graduate from a big prof or so.
anyway, i got $1.5M in 5 years and got tenured without much trouble. i guess

only 1% of ppl actually do that..
For most chinese folks, you would pay the mortage off way ahead of the
schedule .
For most american folks, you would move way before the 30 yr is up..

Morally speaking, I support LZ.
With all the rednecks/that/illegals feasting on my hard-earned tax dollars,
why should I be so mean to my own blood folks when they want to steal just a
rat's bite?
But technically, what LZ trying to do could invite trouble, and I can't
recommend troubles to same-blood folks. So,
1. Don't buy in bad neighborhood at all. Unless, it's actually not so bad,

The Chinese folks who travel to USA for business is considered to be very
successful in China, however, their comversation has nothing in it but
disucssing money money and more money, it is very super facial. I don't see
