上世纪60年代，夏志清出版《现代中国小说史》，不仅深入介绍了张爱玲的成就，并肯定她的地位在多数“五四”作家之上。张爱玲从此进入现代中国文学史的经典，先在海外，然后在中国大陆成为大热的作家。《张爱玲给我的信件》一书内容最早在1997年4月号的《联合文学》刊出，陆续刊载至2002年7月号，共刊出103封张爱玲的信件、卡片。这些信件数量仅次于张爱玲致宋淇夫妇的信札，在这些信里，张爱玲谈创作、谈翻译、谈出版、谈读书、谈生活、谈友情，时间跨度非常大，涉及面非常广。通常在每封信后面，夏志清会加上或短或长的按语，对信里所载之事实及其背景做了些批注和说明，对张迷而言，这将更有助于解读张爱玲。
