those debts, it goes bankrupt.
The mortgage crisis is an obvious case. The bank takes in your money when
you deposit it, and has an obligation to you. It then loans your money out
to somebody. If they don't discharge their debt to the bank, the bank can't
pay you (or its employees, or the guy who fixes the copier, etc). When you
can't pay your debts, you go bankrupt.
