the regular path.
If you are at a senior manager level and do not want to be a partner since
partner has a big pressure of selling business (If you do not sell, you are
out.), you can pursue executive director position, which is almost the same
level as partner's, but do not have to go out to sell and only focuses on
handling all the engagements & technical part.
I guess principal is the highest position for those people who focus on the
human resource, recruiting and other supporting departments.
Not sure if it is 100% right.
Thanks

right on the firm's major decision and don't have a big "say" in hiring, and
even as a counselor to managers they don't have as big influence in the
firm as the partners do. The good side is that they are risk-free, highly
paid employees. Due to the maturity of US public accounting service market,
there are very few spot openings that will let senior manager to be
promoted to partners. I've seen many folks in the senior manager position
in years and had to go to the director path in they still want to stay in
the public field.
As for principal, I believe it's usually for lawyers w/ JD background in
accounting firms, equivalent to director.
corporate director is a completely different story. It's usually a position
in between VP/Controller and senior manager. There's nothing comparable of
it with partners in big4. Partners are basically interest owners of the
firm, and their power depending junior or senior that partner is. The
seniority makes a big difference. Whereas corporate director depends the
corporate structure. Let's say it's a public company but fairly smaller in
size, it may have a tax director rather than a VP of tax as the tax
department head. But at the accounting side, there's always a controller
above the accounting director. | r*****x 发帖数: 97 | 7 Very well said!!
