209 | 10 Transfer Pricing and International Tax both operate in a multi-tax
jurisdiction environment.
Transfer Pricing has little to do with tax law, the only tax code TP
analysts need to deal with is IRC 482 which basically says when you have
intercompany transaction, the intercompany mark-up must be set as if it's an
arm's length transaction. This simple rule sets up the nature of TP which
is heavy in economics analysis. Naturally, most TP analysts have economics
background. Most of the analysis deal with examination of the economic
nature of transactions, e.g. much economic benefit or loss the payer or
payee carry. TP is especially technical when there is intellectual property
involved. It requires strong verbal and quantitative analytical skills.
However, math wise, it's most likely no more beyond algebra, you don't need
to know anything about calculus nor statistics or anything like that.
On the other hand, international tax heavy on the understanding of tax law.
There are vast provisions in the Internal Revenue Code and the Treasury
Regulation that the analysts need to be familiar with. International tax can
be mainly divided into three categories: Subpart F (aka. anti-deferral
provision), foreign tax credit, and income tax provision (which is GAAP
essentially). Again, it requires strong verbal and quantitative analytical
skills, as for most white collar jobs out there. International tax requires
a better understanding of accounting rules as well.
I guess it all comes down to economics vs. law. It's difficult to say one is
harder than the other. Which one interests you personally is probably more
important when choosing a career. :)
One thing more beneficial about TP over international tax is that TP rules
are universally accepted, TP rules in U.S. will probably be recognized by
other country as well. U.S. International tax rules are strictly within U.S.
income tax context.
