139 | 3 Take P or FM first and then MFE, MLC and C. Of course, you can take any
order you want. But I think this is a reasonable order.
If you know master-level math, you can breeze through all preliminary exams.
Just study manuals. I don't think you even need to read the recommended
textbook for preliminary exams. But actuarial science is not just math.
All the math majors I know (a very biased and limited sample) never failed
any exams. In a period of 4 years, I did a Ph.D. in pure math from a
prestigious unversity, achieved ASA title and published 3 journal articles
on math journals. You just need a few month for each exam. I did all
preliminary exams in 1 year and achieved ASA in the 2nd year. One more year to get my FSA. (3 years in total.) You don't need to quit your program if you really want to get both. Two other very good Ph.D. students in my program (one American and one Chinese) both breezed through the exams and become actuaries upon receipt of their Ph.D.'s too.
The bottomline is to be a good actuary, you need business acumen, commonsend
, personal and communication skill which I believe are more important than
your technical abilities. |
