A love-struck public servant has sent the coldest of Canberra hearts
aflutter with his desire to find a woman he met fleetingly at a party.
So beguiled was Steve Tucker by a willowy woman he identified only as "
Olivia" that he declared his pursuit of her in an email to more than 1000
colleagues.
But 3AW radio station said "Olivia" told their reporter through a friend
this morning she did not remember who Mr Tucker was and that she was not
interested in getting in touch with him.

She also did not want to "reveal herself" to the public, 3AW reported her as
saying.
Mr Tucker's bold act quickly made him watercooler fodder for government
officials and romantics across the capital, and soon, the nation.
Officialdom was less enamoured, announcing an investigation into what it
said was an inappropriate email - although it denied speculation he had been
sacked.
Mr Tucker sent the email to the entire ACT branch of the Immigration
Department, listing his direct extension, email and snail mail.
"There is a person that works here at DIAC [Department of Immigration and
Citizenship], who has a housemate by the name of 'Olivia'. This message is
for you," he wrote.
"Olivia is tall and olive skinned. She moved to Canberra from Sydney last
February to work in the Public Service.
"Briefly, I met Olivia on the Saturday night just passed. She left a strong
and positive impression on me. Unfortunately, people got in the way after we
met and I didn't get to finish our meeting how I wanted to. This has been
bugging me ever since.
"If you can kindly let Olivia know that I would like to get in contact with
her or alternatively get in touch with myself, I will be very appreciative.
"Disclaimer: I understand this is not the most appropriate channel. It is
not my intent to misuse this email address. I have struggled to write and
send this message. It has taken all of my willpower to do so."
Soon, Mr Tucker had the online community backing him. The email was posted
on the website, the-riotact.com, and when whispers spread of Mr Tucker's
sacking, an online crusade called "Save Steve" began.
One contributor to the website compared his situation to that of Patrick
Moberg, the man who spotted Australian girl Camille Hayton on the New York
subway in 2007 and found her via the internet by creating the website
NYgirlofmydreams.
Many wished him well in his search, including one who added "though I'd be
kinda freaked out if I was Olivia".
Mr Tucker's telephone was engaged for most of yesterday afternoon when this
website attempted to make contact. He did not respond to an email.
His employer denied Mr Tucker was let go, saying it was "not a sackable
offence".
"We are confirming this morning that an inappropriate email was sent to all
ACT departmental staff by a staff member," an Immigration Department
spokeswoman said.
"The matter is being investigated by the relevant section of the department
and appropriate action will be taken."
By last night, public servants working for the Prime Minister, Attorney-
General and the Departments of Climate Change, Infrastructure, Environment,
Foreign Affairs and Education had all received the email chain.
By late evening a Facebook fan page had been set up for Mr Tucker. By 7.30am
, 160 people had "liked" it.
Rumours circulating from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet said
Olivia did not remember Steve.
But as Mr Tucker finished his missive: "Life is too short for regret. This
phrase I know you all can identify with. Have an awesome Monday." | d*****e
