I called the Chevron customer support line, but they weren't much help.
After being forwarded to a Lube Tech Engineer, he told me that he couldn't
confirm or deny the formulation concentrations, and I should follow the
manufacturers recommendation. However, from the known concentrations that
were sent from the Chevron's Fuel Technical Service, this is what I've
gathered:
1.) Techron Concentrate contains the highest available active ingredient,
which is a Poly Ether Amine with a solvent carrier. Safe for use every 3,
000mi
2.) Pro-Gard Fuel Injector Cleaner contains ½ as much Techron as the
Concentrate. Safe for use every 1,000mi
3.) Chevron Gasoline (87, 89,91) contains 1/5-1/10 as much techron as the
Pro-Gard FI Cleaner and Techron Concentrate, respectively. Safe for use
every Fill Up.
Based on those concentrations and local costs, I think the Pro-Gard FI
cleaner ends up costing less when comparing it to the Techron Concentrate
product (If you buy from Costco). By doubling the dosage of Pro-Gard, you're
essentially adding 1 bottle of Techron Concentrate. This will cost $5 (2
bottles of Pro-Gard @ $2.50 equals 1 bottle of Techron Concentrate) and will
treat 16g of gas. If we adjust the volumes to reflect Techron Concentrate
commercially available volumes, then the 12oz equivalent Techron Concentrate
costs $3.75 and 20oz Techron Concentrate equivalent costs $6.25.
If you want to add Techron in non-Chevron gasoline, then you can add use 1oz
Pro-Gard FI cleaner for every 5g gasoline to blend the Techron additive
into non-Chevron gas. This comes out to an extra $0.03 per gallon ($2.50/
16oz x 1oz/5g gasoline). You can also use 1oz Techron Concentrate per 10g
gasoline, but it costs $0.05 per gallon, assuming you pay $10 for 20oz. I
probably wouldn't recommend this course of action because there may be a
shelf life to how long the active ingredients last after being opened. Also,
the Techron additive may mix with other additive compounds from other gas
additives making a new additive that may be cause deposits. Lastly, Chevron
gas usually doesn't cost more than $.05 per gallon compared to non-Chevron
gas, so you're probably better off getting Techron at the pump instead of
measuring "x" amount of Techron concentrate to add to the gas tank.
