The recall affects 159,884 Jetta TDI sedans and SportWagens manufactured
from May 2008 through September 2011 and VW Golf TDIs manufactured from May
2009 through September 2011.
According to online reports, the pulse of the injector operates at the same
frequency as the natural resonance of that injector line, causing it to
become fatigued and fail. The resulting fuel leak can lead to an engine fire
. The injectors in these common-rail diesel engines operate at extremely
high pressures of up to 26,000 psi, so a fuel leak can be catastrophic. The
cars affected had between 2,500 and 7,800 miles.
Volkswagen says the recalled cars will be fitted with a damper to quell the
vibrations and will be inspected for fatigued fuel lines, which will be
replaced if necessary.
Given the severity of risk, and that VW itself has notified dealerships to
temporarily halt sales on new models until a fix can be implemented, we
recommend consumers considering buying one of these models wait. Current
owners should contact their local dealership schedule an immediate
inspection, and ask for a loaner if necessary. |

26000psi。这个压强是个什么概念呢？海平面大气压14.7psi，轮胎~30psi，玛丽亚娜
海沟11000米深度水压~16000psi。
再看看金属的耐压强度(yield strength)：超过这个强度金属就会塑性变形。
316 stainless steel (常见手表用不锈钢)
400 deg F - 29000 psi
800 deg F - 25000 psi
1000 deg F - 23000 psi
1200 deg F - 21000 psi
TDI高达~800 degree F的燃烧温度下，injector的耐压强度要求极高，而且不能有缺陷
。这么高的压强也是为什么common rail的high pressure fuel pump (HPFP)容易坏的
原因。
这次VW大概要降低成本，在美国版上common rail到injector的管子用的材料不行，才
会出问题。
出了问题还不老实，只提供打补丁似的recall，加个成本几分钱的固定件，不解决根本
的材料问题。过几年这些车出问题的机会很大。 |
