We had this 2008 Expedition EL Eddie Bauer only 10 months. My wife was
making a left hand turn one morning when the kids school was cancelled. She
did not even see the other guy coming. Her light turned green, she started
to make her turn, and she was broadsided by a Ford F-250 Super-Duty 2WD that
ran a red light. The cops say he was going somewhere around 50-55 mph when
he hit her. She slid almost a hundred feet sideways, the side curtain
airbags deployed, and the passenger side of our Expedition was crushed in
almost a foot. My three year old was sitting on that side in the second row
in her toddler seat and five-point harness. My other two kids were in their
booster seats. I had no idea that the Expedition had a five-star rating for
side impact crash, but now I know. Two weeks later, my wife had a brand new
2010 Expedition EL Limited. Thank you Ford for engineering safety into your
vehicles. It saved my family. | z****0

independent source (and your brain) rather than commercial propaganda. I
wouldn't comment on which is safer but in general it's not wise to spend the
extra money on heavier vehicles that you feel comfortable to afford.
According to IIHS: "Side crash test ratings can be compared across vehicle
categories."
If you really think about physics, the severity of a damage in a side crash
is determined by the vehicle from hitting the side, not by the vehicle being
hit. The IIHS test ratings are based on controlled settings. So I feel
confident to say that the weight of the vehicle being hit is irrelevant to
side impact safety.
There is one difference between IIHS and real world accidents. It is
different to be hit by a truck / truck-based SUV, or a by a car. If your
vehicle is hit on the side by a truck, higher frame presumably brings you
more safety. However, IIHS and manufactures probably have already considered
the height of the impact area, though I don't know much about this area.
There is one disadvantage for a truck-based vehicle. It's more difficult to
design a impact absorb function on a body on frame vehicle than on a uni-
body vehicle. | D***0
