Considering that the diminutive Abarth comes with a roly-poly driving
position, semi-cartoonish looks and one of the most comical manual shifters
on the market (honestly, it’s like a bowling pin), this is still a
ridiculously fun car to drive. Forward thrust is short of a Mini Cooper S
JCW or similar, but then, so’s the price point. However, where the little
Abarth really earns its name is in the startling rumble that comes out of
its twin exhausts when you fire it up.
Remember, this is just a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine – less displacement
than your average pop bottle – so you expect the same uninspiring
flatulence you get from a Honda Civic with one of those ridiculous bazooka
mufflers.
But the Abarth isn’t like that at all, and in fact doesn’t even have a
muffler. Thanks to Fiat’s partnership with Chrysler, this little pocket
hooligan comes with turbo-back piping that’s got a touch of Shelby in it,
as in the old Shelby Omni GLH-S. It’s an Italian-American rumble-pop-bang,
and possibly the best bargain soundtrack on the market.
