Lin's influence extends beyond his spectacular plays on the court
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Not much of a week for Jeremy Lin.
All he has done, in a week and a day, is save the Knicks’ season for now,
maybe save Mike D’Antoni’s job, and make Knicks fans feel genuinely happy
for the first time in a long time, and that includes giving away half the
team and what felt like half of Cablevision’s channels to get Carmelo
Anthony a year ago.
“Friday night,” my friend Bill Goldman, a season-ticket holder since he
first met Dave DeBusschere in the early ’70s, said Saturday, “is the most
fun we’ve had since Sprewell and Houston and Camby.”
The key word, of course, being “fun.” At the Garden. Because of the Knicks.
All Jeremy Lin has done — for now — is not just become the best story of a
Knicks season that was going nowhere, a season that could easily have been
8-20 after Saturday night, but become the best story of a whole fast-and-
furious NBA season that has mostly been a mess, all those games crammed into
a period of time that does feel shorter than a Kardashian marriage.
I realized the other day that we are coming up on the NBA All-Star Game and
actually thought: Why?
All Jeremy has done, just with the five games he played, was make us think
— if this all turns out to be real — that the Knicks have found the best
and most intelligent point-guard play they have had since Mark Jackson was a
kid.
And Jackson, when you add it all up, was the best they’d had since Clyde.
All Jeremy Lin will eventually do — wait and see if he keeps playing like
this, this great kid out of Harvard and the D-League and off the end of
three NBA benches already — is end the dispute between Cablevision and Time
Warner, so that Knicks fans who can’t afford the ridiculous ticket prices
at the Garden can watch the kid play on television before the season is over.
That kind of point guard play from the Harvard guy. In a week you now hope
is the beginning of something real, and lasting, and good. If you have
watched the Knicks since Clyde finally got old, and my first job in New York
was covering the end of his career, you know that for all the “Mecca”
stuff about a Madison Square Garden that hasn’t seen an NBA champion in
nearly 40 years, the Knicks haven’t exactly had you thinking they had
insights into a beautiful offense that the rest of the league didn’t. Or
doesn’t.
It is only a week, an incredibly small shooting-star sampling so far, a
dream schedule even culminating against the team that used to be the Los
Angeles Lakers. But just when we were starting to wonder who was going to be
this season’s Knick savior after Carmelo was last year’s Knick savior,
here comes this kid, from the end of the bench.
He started the season with the Golden State Warriors, and I asked my friend
Paul Westphal, still coaching the Kings at the start of the year, if he knew
anything about Lin, saw something in him.
“The only person I know who thought he could play in the league was Pete
Carril,” Westphal said, referencing the legendary Princeton coach who went
to work for the Kings after leaving Princeton. “And Pete thinks all Ivy
League guys can make it in the league, whether they’re Asian-American or
not.”
Suddenly, out of nowhere, the kid is front page and back page, after the
Giants got off the front and back pages. Amazing. The other day, before the
Lakers game, Lin said, “I wanted to not be the 12th or 15th guy on a team.
… Then I was the 12 or 15th guy. That's why I got waived a couple of times.”
Now he has become that kind of story, one that makes Knicks fans, diehards
like Bill Goldman who keep going to the game and the diehards not allowed to
watch the games on television right now, believe. And feel good about their
team, at least for a little while.
The people in charge at the Garden make it so hard to embrace their teams,
obsessed as they are with the media in a grudge-holding, get-even way,
instead of just getting out of the way and allowing their players and
coaches and team executives to present themselves naturally to the public.
Now here comes a kid like this and a week like this and a story like this,
out of nowhere, when the Knicks’ season was about to be lost. One year
after they gave up the store to get Carmelo and still couldn’t win a
playoff game, here comes the kid off the end of the bench to make people
feel good about the Knicks, after a decade when they were the feel-bad
capital of their sport.
