This is a follow-up to my story about Jeremy Lin’s effects on the price of
Knicks tickets, both home and away.
Lin and the Knicks will be going for their sixth straight win when they play
the Raptors tonight in Toronto. The game is expected to be sold out – only
the third game that the Raptors have sold out this season – thanks in
large part to Lin’s presence.
The Knicks return to New York tomorrow to begin a five game homestand, and
their next away game isn’t until their showdown with the Miami Heat next
Thursday. It might not be too surprising anymore, but Linsanity’s effects
on ticket prices are already apparent, despite the game being more than a
week away.
A review of Miami’s box office ticket prices shows that the Heat have
raised prices by nearly $100 in some sections. A seat in the upper corner of
the arena is listed at $142. The exact same seat costs just $47 for the
Heat’s game against the Sacramento Kings two days earlier. Not many seats
are still available on the lower level for the Knicks game, but a last row
ticket in the corner of the lower bowl is available for $219. A fan going to
the game two nights earlier would have to pay just $152 for the same seat.
Jeremy Lin’s economic impact is also apparent on secondhand market sites
like StubHub. Ticket prices are up as much as $150 in some sections, and
those price increases will only go higher as the day of game draws nearer.
That last-row seat in the lower corner of the arena can be bought for as
little as $90 for the Heat-Kings game next week. The Knicks arrive in Miami
two nights later, and the very same seat will cost fans at least $240. Some
tickets in the same section are going for as much as $444.
And don’t forget that increased ticket revenue is just one of the many
economic impacts that Lin’s sudden dominance has had on the league.
Increased ticket sales at away games will provide other teams additional in-
stadium concession and merchandise sales. The 30 NBA teams share league
merchandise revenue, which means they all benefit from Lin’s jersey leading
the league in sales. Lin’s popularity has also helped boost Madison Square
Garden’s stock price over the last few days.
It is unclear how much longer Lin and the Knicks can continue to play at
such an elevated level, but teams across the league are glad to be reaping
the benefits. |
