No offense, I think this is a gross overreaction. To be fair to Melo,
recently the Knicks have played the Mavericks, Spurs, Celtics and Heat, not
exactly the Raptor/Bobcats/Nets/Kings/Hawks diet they had earlier during
their run.
Part of the reason the Knicks paid so much for Melo is because superstar
level players, franchise players who are marketable are scarce. Without a
franchise level player, you CANNOT win a championship. Is it because of
talent? No, it's because David Stern requires a certain levels of ratings to
make the NBA profit during the playoffs and Finals. Superstars and their
associated storylines drive those ratings. This is why teams like the
Warriors and Rockets are so desperate to acquire a superstar, even a flawed
one, because they can't even get in the conversation of contending without
one.
Without a "superstar", you have no chance with the refs. With a superstar
versus superstar matchup in the playoffs, in a contest between two players,
you get "clean calls" The refs let them play usually. Without a superstar,
your player is called for phantom calls, phantom charges and general BS
simply because the other guy can sell more branded shoes.
Melo is a top 20 player, sure he's not a top 5 player, too bad he's not, but
it still means he can kick, punch, spit, elbow, shove, jab, kidney punch,
assault and maul 90 percent of other players in the league with no
retribution by the refs. Do you think a ref is going to risk being chewed
out and lose his promotion or raises by fouling out Melo on defense? The
problem is Melo does not take advantage of the way the rules benefit him
defensively. If you can't be a great defender, then be a dirty one, just as
good. Derek Fisher is not a great defender now or ever. He was however a
dirty one. But he was head of the players union, the refs had to consider
that Fisher had influence in how the refs got paid and treated. ( In the
last lockout, if Fisher dragged it out, Stern would have gotten angrier and
angrier and taken it out on the refs union, which also had to renegotiate)
Now that Fisher has no more pull since he will retire before the next CBA/
labor war, he's getting zero calls. Melo is an elite player, he doesn't need
a special circumstance like Fisher to get calls, those call become VALUABLE
and NEEDED in a deep playoff run.
Can you sell shoes for David Stern?
Does Stern see a bunch of ignorant little thug life yos shoot each other to
death for Melo shoes?
Can you sell McDonalds for David Stern?
Do international fans want to see Melo play in world competition for Team
USA?
How much merchandise does Melo sell for the NBA?
Does Melo's wife give Stern access to the female or celebrity demographic of
fans that he has always coveted?
Does Melo have a storyline that Stern can exploit for a playoff matchup? Did
Melo grow up an orphan? Did Melo grow up in poverty?
The NBA is not a sport. It's American Idol. What is the most compelling
human interest story I can market if I let Melo into the NBA Finals? This is
a bigger determinant on the Knicks success than the Knicks actual play. If
Stern wants the Knicks in the Finals, he just gifts Lin and Melo 30 free
throws a game each.
Melo gives the Knicks a lot of these things for the league. The Knick had no
idea they had Jeremy Lin and Linsanity on their hands, they went for a
marketable and elite player because it's how Stern has set up the league to
win or not win. The big problem for the Knicks isn't just Melo's lack of
defense, it's that Linsanity is worth a billion dollars in marketing and
merchandising and international branding of the NBA if Lin plays 10 years in
the league and wins at least one ring.
I don't know why Knicks fans are stressing out now. Lin, regardless of who
his team mates are, is a printing press for money for the league and Stern's
foothold into Asian markets for the game in a way he could not conceive.
The Knicks were NEVER in the conversation for a ring last year, it was going
to be the Heat, Clippers, Bulls and Thunder, teams that had stars ( James,
Griffin, Durant, Rose) that corporations spent big money on and want a
return on the investment. Now the Knicks are in the conversation. Within the
next six years, the Knicks will win a ring. David Stern is remarkably
consistent, he will cheat for whichever player or team that can make him and
the NBA owners the most money possible. Or, given a tough circumstance,
will prevent the league from losing money over the long haul. ( Even the
Spurs, a ratings nosedive, were worth money, he had to keep Peter Holt happy
, who is instrumental in the gigantic TV/network deals the league negotiates
. Pistons to obscure Kobe's rape and Mavericks to prevent an all out war
between small and large market owners during a labor fight. )
The press is on the attack on Melo because that's how Stern wants it.
Attacking Melo protects Lin's marketability, which is worth gold to the
league.
THE KNICKS WILL WIN A RING AT SOME POINT IN THE NEXT SIX YEARS AS LONG AS
LIN IS ON THIS TEAM. Whether Melo is on the team or not or how he is playing
will have nothing to do with it.

thing. Only NBA gets profit, they can pay the so much high salary to them.
This is the life. Melo is not necessary to feel bad, after all he got
18million a year for five years, which most people can not earn that much in
their life.
