more.
for bachelor's degree, you have to be training in a clinical lab. > 6 months
(may be one year) before you are qualified to sit for the certificate
examination. The clincal lab. you worked should be approved by those
international orgnizations, such as ASCP .
Up to now, there is no any clinical lab. in China has been approved by this
certification system. In another words, you did not have any chance to
sit for the examination even you have worked in China in the same area, such
as me.
You can apply for the training program, which is very competitive,
especially for those without a green card, the chance is close to zero. One
program in our University only provide about 10 positions (department of
Pathology) for graduates major in biomedical area. We are a top 20
university. |

she came to enroll new trainees) that a technician level can even earn $
100,000/year if he/she wants to take the night/weekend/ shifts.
A specialist level should be more than $70,000.
In US, there is always more need for the clinical technicians. However, they
intently limit the number of trainees.

Is there anybody worked as an MT could explain a little bit here? I was very
interested in MT. What i learned:
1, One of my graduate student colleague (6 years ago) said his salary is
about $38,000/year. He worked two years in the clincal lab after graduated
from college.
2, Years ago, A MT supervisor came to our university to recruit new trainnee
. She mentioned that this job is very stable and the job market is pretty
good. The night/weekend shif should be double paid. That is why some young
MT could earned about $100,000/year because they like to take the night
shift.
3, I had tried to quit my Ph D and get a ASCP license. I had lots of
experiences in clinical lab. in China. I put my CV on some websites at that
time. I could get at leat three calls a week in the first two weeks from
headhunters. Unfortunately, i cannot get license in USA, also i did not have
a green card.
4, I worked very closely with a clinical lab. now. The director and MT
supervisor of the clincal lab have a meeting with us every two weeks. We had
planned to set up a 'research CLIA Lab. But they told us that it is hard
to find a 'good MT', the MTs are already short currently.
5, After half year, my lab technician (US citizen) quited and went to their training
class for the board certification.
I had thought MT is a good job in USA. Usaully, hospital has a good benifit
for its employee.
Please clarify.

however, your data is out of date. if you are looking for a new position, you are not going to get that salary unless you are considered exceptionally good (by being exceptionally good, it means you can set up some new tests that are unavailable before your employment). what we offer to applicants is lower than your numbers and they tell me it is already considerably higher than what others offer them.

In our system, the salary is in the same pay grade as a basic science assistant professor. Typically if you establish some lucrative new tests for the hospital, you get a huge bonus, otherwise there is not much to expect beyond your regular pay.
In hospitals, the central laboratory is usually directed by a pathologist (MD) subspecialized in laboratory medicine and PhD-trained clinical laboratory directors only direct smaller specialized labs, such as the male infertility lab here, or serve as technical supervisors of small groups in the central lab.
There are numerous small boards involved in the certification of PhD-trained clinical laboratory directors. The only ones I remember are the board of bioanalysis and the board for medical geneticists (non-MD track).

绝对不是fantasizing。不过得上2年的trainning program拿到licence。program也挺

brief interaction with two such persons recently, one is the director of the
male fertility lab in urology, the other director of flowcytometry in the

we just streamlined our service process and pared down one position. now 4
techs doing the work previously done by 5, saving one person's pay to use on
the research side for developing new tests.

拿到此数是很有可能的。大多数是要求必须在开始工作前就有lincense或者在工作的规
定期限内拿到。但也有少数的单位没有硬性的规定，只是prefer而已。

comparable to a post-doc, but more stable and simple, more like a perminant
job. At director level, the salary is comparable to a PI, but there is hard
money (clinical service), don't need to worry grants all time. Overall, it
is a better career than pure research, unless you really like science.
