Three reasons for success
Fuchu He believes that there are several reasons
why AMMS is able to deliver on its promises
with such high efficiency. The first reason
is quality. He says that in any country, ‘military
grade’ is always the highest grade because the
product must be able to operate under extreme
conditions. “Coartem and our independently
developed antiviral drugs reflect our quality and
capability,” He says.
The second reason is talent. From past to
present, the AMMS has always nurtured the
largest pool of elite scientists the country can
offer. The first generation of AMMS talents,
known as pioneers, is made up almost entirely
of elite scientists from their respective
fields. Most of them have received education
or worked in other countries, particularly the
US and Western Europe, and joined the AMMS
after returning to China. The second generation
of AMMS talents is mostly made up of Candidates
of Science — the equivalent of a master’s
qualification — from Russia and Eastern Europe.
The third generation of talents is primarily
made up of the top five students from the most
prestigious universities in China. “So basically
the top researchers in these three generations
form the backbone of the AMMS,” says He.
The third reason is discipline. He explains
that the AMMS has a military culture that other
institutes usually do not. Talents working at
the AMMS are highly cooperative. “In modern
times, such discipline can be rare in research.
It’s the kind of discipline you might have found
only in large-scale technology projects with very
tight organization like China’s space program or
the Apollo project.” |
