If you have a PhD, don't be fooled by National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
Postdocs don't merely need appreciation, they need to be paid what they are
worth.
Unfortunately, this week has become nothing more than a way for
organizations to hide the fact that they have no solution for the postdoc
crises in academia, and that they are unwilling to pay postdocs what they
are worth.
The NIH’s suggested 2017 annual salary for a 0-year (starting) postdoc is $
47,484.
Yet, the AVERAGE salary of ALL postdocs, whether they are just starting or
are in their 7+ year is only $46,142 (less than the 0-year recommendation).
This is not appreciation.
The best way to show postdocs you appreciate them is to either A) pay them
what they are worth, or B) train them to get a job outside of academia where
they will actually be paid what they are worth.
If you want to truly celebrate postdoc appreciation week, celebrate it by
remembering your value as a PhD.
Celebrate it by taking your job search seriously, sharpening your
transferable skills, increasing your industry credibility, and finding
employment at an organization that truly values you.

发帖数: 32 | 4 是否“了不起”并不关键，因为地球上也就母亲能担得起这三个字。关键postdoc，特
别是想走academic，是一个非常vulnerable的群体。几乎所有的postdoc都或多或少的
遭受着老板和工作单位不知羞耻的bully。我想这其中最大的问题就是推荐信制度，再
有就是现有funding制度严重限制了postdoc的存在意义。现在让人比较欣慰的就是k99
的存在。

of getting a "real job" even worse as it will encourage even more people to
go into doctoral programs. Reducing the supply of graduate students, which
will eventually reduce postdocs, or increasing the demand by having the
programs provide real value for non-academic fields are the answers.

而不是靠把这个行业弄成烂坑。
NIH funding砍一半就解决问题了，床铺其实高瞻远瞩。
