Original Email from Richard Sander:
"Karen and Alex,
I hope this finds you both well. Things are good here.
I think good progress is being made on the problem of anti-
Asian discrimination in higher education. As you might recall, in the fall
of 2014 I decided to focus my efforts in this area on the lawsuits by
Students for Fair Admissions against Harvard and the University of North
Carolina; I’m assisting the plaintiffs as a pro bono expert. Both cases
are doing well; the federal district judge in each case has required the
universities to produce substantial data on admissions, and are making
steady progress in getting to the bottom of the schools’ practices. We
also hope that the Supreme Court’s decision on Fisher v. University of
Texas (expected next spring) will provide some help on this front.
I’m writing now to introduce you to Ron Unz (cc’ed above),
who is coordinating another strategy to put pressure on Harvard (and
indirectly, on other elite schools). Ron has assembled a strong slate of
activists to run for five open positions on Harvard’s Board of Overseers.
This strategy has been quite effective in the past in pressuring Harvard to
make substantive changes in policy, as well as gaining broad publicity on
important issues. The slate is running on two issues: first, ending Asian
quotas in Harvard admissions; and second, abolishing tuition (only about 5%
of Harvard’s income currently comes from tuition and student fees). The
New York Times will shortly be running a story about this campaign.
The first objective in the Overseer campaign is getting
about 200 signatures from Harvard alumni for the candidate petitions. I’m
hoping that SVCA’s network might identify some alumni who would be willing
to consider signing the petitions. Ron will follow up on this email, and be
able to provide you with additional details, but please let me know if I
can be helpful in providing more background, too.
I look forward to catching up with both of you before long.
Best,
Rick Sander
UCLA
"

Q/A with Ron: (Karen Koko&Alex)
Q1: If they sign the petition, how much personal info will be disclosed to
Harvard, or to the public?
A1: The petitions require them to include their mailing address, their
business address, their Harvard degree, and that's about it. They are
merely signing a nomination petition for an Overseer candidate, which is
totally non-controversial, and not publicly disclosed.
Q2: How much will they involve in later lawsuit against Harvard?
A2: None of this has anything to do with any sort of lawsuit, either
against Harvard or anything else. They're simply signing a nomination
petition. I'm sure Rich Sander, as a law professor, can provide you with
much more detailed information on any possible legal issues involved, which
seem to me non-existent.
Q3: Is this urgent? What is the deadline?
A3: Highly urgent. All physical signatures have to be collected by 1/31/
2016 to be valid. As the first step, we need email list as early as
possible.
Q4: Is Harvard MBA qualified?
A4: Anyone holding a Harvard MBA is ABSOLUTELY qualified to sign our
petitions. Harvard alumni eligible to sign include anyone with an
undergraduate or graduate degree, from the College, the Graduate School of
Arts & Sciences, the Law School, the Business School, the Design School, the
Kennedy School, or any other of the several degree-granting bodies within
Harvard University.
Q5: Is a student who is still studying in Harvard qualified for the
signature?
A5: Unfortunately NO. Only individuals who have *already* obtained a
Harvard degree (of any type) are eligible. That includes Harvard grad
students who have a A.B. from the College, but not students who have yet to
obtain their degree.
