NATO ally Turkey has selected a U.S. sanctioned Chinese company to build its
first long-range air defence and anti-missile system, Turkish media
reported.
The China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp (CPMIEC) won the $4 billion
contract beating off competitions from U.S. company Raytheon-Lockheed
Martin, Russia's Rosoboronexport and Italian-French consortium Eurosam.
Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz announced the decision to award the
contract to the state-run CPMIEC in a statement on Thursday, the Today's
Zaman newspaper reported.
The United States in February imposed sanctions on CPMIEC for violations of
the Iran, North Korea and Syria Non-proliferation Act.
Turkey, which has the second-largest deployable military force in the NATO
alliance, has no long-range missile defense system of its own, but NATO has
deployed the U.S.-built Patriot air and missile defense system in the
country last year.
Yilmaz also announced the cancellation of a contract to build six corvettes
by Turkish conglomerate Ko |
