No state tax for the first 5K contribution every year. (7-8% saving)
Tax-free increase.
Tax-free distribution for college expense (tuition, book, computer...)
The NC 529 plan now has some good lost cost index funds. I am seriously
thinking open one.

Rich guy ah. Are you thinking about a 400k fund? You may really need a
trust…
I can only think about a 100-150k fund, which is probably not enough even
for a state university 10-15 years from now.
For your question, the unused money can be used for all higher education,
meaning graduate study, law school, MD …
It can be used on other children for higher education.
It can be used for other purposes too, just pay the over-due tax and a small
penalty.

这里有自相矛盾的说法（Reference 3,and 5)
In addition, under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, 529
college savings plans and prepaid tuition plans are now treated as an asset
of the account owner (typically the parent), meaning they have little impact
on a student’s eligibility for financial aid.[3]
Paying tuition directly from a 529 account may reduce a student's
eligibility for need-based financial aid.[5]
2.而且，貌似今天可以买未来的credit，是不是说可以抵御学费上涨？那买的credit可
以跨州跨校用么？
3。什么时候开始放也是问题。如果影响Financial Aid ,能不能当年放（看申请结果而
定）当年拿出来用？
