Group Leader of Catalytic Materials
Location: Madison, WI
The Group Leader of Catalytic Materials is part of the technical team
pursuing the Company’s advancement of the catalytic-based BioForming®
process. This position will be responsible for generation of fundamental
concepts involving fabrication and characterization catalytic materials
necessary for the BioForming® Process, and the generation of data
necessary to prove out these concepts. The ideal candidate will bring
demonstrated technical leadership and a successful track record of
developing catalytic materials, testing and characterization of these
materials, and analyzing performance data from these materials.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Implement best practices in process and laboratory safety.
* Provide Technical Leadership for the synthesis and characterization of
materials utilized in our company’s novel catalytic methods to produce
liquid fuels and chemicals from biomass-derived feedstocks.
* Establish fundamental technical understanding of catalytic materials,
chemical reactions and deactivation mechanisms utilized in company’s
catalytic processes.
* Use in-house knowledge as well as existing commercial catalytic
technologies discovered through literature reviews, and other means, to
synthesize new catalytic materials necessary to convert biomass-derived
feedstocks to liquid fuels or chemicals under an agreed to work plan.
* Identify challenges, opportunities, pathways and high impact tasks to
move a given process from lab scale to commercial scale and establish work
plans to address key challenges and uncertainties.
* Work with Researchers and Researcher Engineers to establish
fundamental understanding of the catalytic chemistry, chemical reactions and
process integration requirements in company’s catalytic processes.
* Execute work plans with sense of urgency and emphasis on accelerating
commercial readiness.
* Provide mentoring and support to technical staff as a source of
competency for catalytic chemistry. Collaborate with the following groups to
identify high impact tasks and challenges in the following areas:
o Process Chemistry Group – catalytic performance and catalytic
deactivation with real feeds
o Fundamental Chemistry Group – develop understanding of the
effects of catalyst on process chemistry
o Analysis Group – chemical analysis of catalytic materials
o Feedstock Group – determination of feedstock contaminates that
will influence catalytic performance
* Work with partners of company in the development of technology. This
includes the development of outsourcing relationships where appropriate.
* Mentor and train chemist and engineers in the catalytic materials
group, including the development of individual career plans.
* Manage resources and staff planning.
* Work with Business Development and Process Engineering to identify
influence of catalytic materials on the cost of manufacturing.
* Work with company intellectual property counsel to establish strong IP
position based on inventions developed by department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
· EDUCATION:
BS or higher in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
· EXPERIENCE:
5-10 years minimum experience in catalytic research and development.
Experience in the area of liquid fuels preferred.
Must have been exposed to multiple process chemistry technologies and the
development of these technologies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions
* Demonstrated technical leadership for developing understanding of
catalytic materials fabrication, catalytic chemistry and catalytic processes
and utilizing this understanding to synthesize catalytic materials for the
generation of liquid fuels or chemicals.
* Ability to contribute conceptualize, build and train a high performing
catalytic materials groups that supports the goals of the organization.
* Bias toward development with emphasis on creative and innovative
problem solving.
* Act with a sense of urgency and a commitment to succeed.
* Strong knowledge in process safety.
* Leadership to mentor and develop chemists and engineers (career
development).
* Engineering experience with catalytic processes used in petroleum
refineries a plus.
* Able to accept responsibility, delegate, and follow through on
multiple tasks simultaneously to completion.
* Able to lead and participate effectively in a team environment.
* Able to adopt an applications-oriented, hands-on focus.
