The National Academy of Sciences announced today the election of 84 new
members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries in recognition of their
distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 2,179 and
the total number of foreign associates to 437. Foreign associates are
nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United
States
.

她1933年出生,1949年上海8中高中毕业(时年16岁),同样考入上海交大化工专业(点
击参见资料来源),1953年本科毕业,上面附件中的英文报道说是1952年毕业,应该有
误,而上海交大饮水思源BBS上则也说是“53年化工毕业,2000年当选美国工程院院士
。未见任何中文媒体报道,交大校友信息库里也没有”(点击查看来源),所以,以目前
的证据来看,应该是1953年毕业。并且我第一次知道了上海交大的另外一个译名:
Shiao Tung University in Shanghai,当时交通大学尚没有拆分为上海交大和西安交
大,或者说西安交大尚没有迁到西安,所以万也许可以同时算作两校的校友。另外,网
上有以讹传讹的错误, 有的网站说是“上海交通大学65届化工系学士”;3)当选院士
最早,2000年当选,是为文革后大陆留学人员当选美国工程院院士第一人,王晓东是2
004年当选为美国科学院院士的,是文革后大陆留学人员当选美国科学院院院士第一
人,比万荣玉还晚了4年,因此,万荣玉还是文革后大陆留学人员当选美国科学院、工
程院院士的第一人,开了先河;4)万荣玉是还是文革后大陆留学人员当选美国科学院、
工程院院士的11位中的唯一一位女性!5)1953年大学毕业后,一直到1980年一直在中国
大陆的矿业(企业或研究所)界工作,1980年留学美国犹他大学,并于1984年获得博士
学位,1987-2001年间在美国Newmount矿业公司工作。2009年9月22日病逝于癌症。也是
上述11位院士中唯一一位已经去世的。(据我了解,我的上述如此简单的对万荣玉的介
绍,都已经算是中文网站中最详细的了)。
