October 9 Fire Department Open House and Fire Prevention Week - The Skokie F
ire Department will host a public open house on Sunday, October 9 from 1 to
4 p.m. at Fire Station 17, 8157 Central Park Avenue. The free event includes
. Meeting Skokie firefighters
. Viewing firefighting apparatus and equipment
. Touring the fire station
. Fire safety activities for children
. A ride on an antique fire truck
. Information on other Village programs
Home fire safety will be the emphasis of Fire Prevention Week 2011, which be
gins on October 9 and ends on October 15. National statistics show that eigh
t percent of all fire deaths occur in the home. Illinois law requires all re
sidences to have working smoke detectors installed within 15 feet of all sle
eping areas. The Skokie Fire Department recommends checking a smoke detector
's battery monthly. Replace detectors according to manufacturer's recommenda
tions or a minimum every 10 years. Please contact the Skokie Fire Prevention
