“Manly, Christian character.” That was the ideal that Endicott Peabody, a
member of the New England Brahmin class, hoped to cultivate in the boys who
attended his private boarding school, Groton. Peabody founded Groton in 1884
with the purpose of building character and embedding the value of “
noblesse oblige” into the social fabric of late-nineteenth-century America.
Groton students, like young men from seven other boarding schools in the
northeastern United States, were to embody character, manliness, and
athleticism. The “Big Three” colleges—Harvard, Yale, and Princeton—
validated these ideals by admitting nearly all boarding-school applicants
and conferring honorary degrees upon Peabody.
Admission into the “Big Three” was fairly easy if the applicant possessed
a “manly, Christian character.” He had to pass subject-based entrance
exams devised by the colleges, but the tests weren’t particularly hard, and
he could take them over and over again to pass. Even if a student didn’t
pass the required exams, he could be admitted with “conditions.” Once
enrolled at Harvard, Yale, or Princeton, he would focus primarily on his
social life, clubs, sports, social organizations, and campus activities,
while often ignoring his academic work.
Admissions began to change, however, when Charles William Eliot became
president of Harvard in 1869. Annoyed with “the stupid sons of the rich,”
Eliot sought to draw into the university’s fold capable students from all
segments of society. To ensure that smart students could attend Harvard
regardless of their means, Eliot, in 1898, abolished the archaic Greek
admission exams that were popular up until that time. He also replaced
Harvard’s admissions exams with exams created by the College Entrance
Examination Board because it tripled the number of locations where
applicants could be tested. The result of Eliot’s changes was the admission
of more public school students, including Catholics and Jews.
A. Lawrence Lowell, Eliot’s successor, attempted to reverse the trend of
admitting those without WASP status and values. The “Jewish problem” in
particular alarmed Lowell. The number of Jews at Harvard had increased
steadily, from 10 percent in 1909, to 15 percent in 1915, to 21.5 percent in
1922. In addition to their growth in numbers, Jews generally outperformed
non-Jewish students academically. Lowell worried that Harvard might suffer
the same fate as Columbia, which experienced “WASP flight” as more Jewish
students started to enroll. In response, Lowell limited freshman enrollment
to one thousand and altered the admissions criteria to include an emphasis
on “character,” legacy, and athleticism rather than solely on academic
achievement. Additionally, the application process now required interviews
and photos, as well as letters of recommendation. Initially a method to
limit Jewish enrollment, the notion of a “well-rounded” applicant was born
in the first half of the 1920s.

of the graduating class of 2012 — went to Ivies, according to a tally by

昂茨文中第一页就点明了整个问题的大背景：今日美国贫富悬殊愈演愈烈，中产阶级每
况愈下。在这种向上流动性大减，“胜者全拿”的社会里，对绝大多数家庭而言进入常
春藤名校是保证子女将来有出息的唯一道路。
上图显示了美国社会顶层的1%人口占有了35.4%的财富，前5%的人口占有了63.1%的社会
财富，剩下的95%民众只有36.9%的社会财富。
二十世纪二十年代年之前包括哈佛在内的常春藤名校是按学术成绩来录取的，渐渐的学
术成绩优异的犹太裔学生大量涌入常春藤名校。掌控着常春藤名校的盎格努撒克逊后裔
们在二十年代发明了这套号称考虑多方面条件的录取制度好把犹太学生的比例限制在15
%之内。
其实其中的秘密说出来一文不值，基于学习成绩的录取制度也许谈不上是什么好制度，
但是至少公平透明，客观性强。但是哈佛大学在二十年代年引入的这套复杂，充满主观
因素的录取制度最妙之处就在于完全失去透明性，你很难直接对比两个学生，而校方就
可以一手遮天，一方面把犹太裔学生数目限制在一定比例下，一方面脸不红心不跳地否
认自己有任何歧视性政策，是不是听上去很熟悉？
昂茨说的很直白：二战之后，犹太社团通过靠着大规模在媒体和政治上造势给予常春藤
名校巨大的压力。与此同时犹太社团几乎接管了美国的主流媒体，所有三大电视网，九
个好莱坞制片厂中的八家，很多大报社，包括纽约时报和华盛顿邮报都被其控制。而掌
握了权力的胜利果实如此甜蜜：1965年耶鲁更换了招生办公室的工作人员，第二年，犹
太裔学生数量翻番。
与此相反的是，今天亚裔啥也没有，在电影电视电台和出版物上亚裔几乎毫无踪迹。对
大多数美国人而言，主流媒体不报道的事情就不存在，亚裔被歧视当然也就不会有多少
人注意到了。
昂茨列出了触目惊心的数据：Princeton sociologist Thomas J. Espenshade and his
colleagues have demonstrated that among undergraduates at highly selective
schools such as the Ivy League, white students have mean scores 310 points
higher on the 1600 SAT scale than their black classmates, but Asian students
average 140 points above whites. The former gap is an automatic consequence
of officially acknowledged affirmative action policies, while the latter
appears somewhat mysterious.
也就是说，常春藤的白人学生平均SAT分数要比非洲裔同学要高310分（满分1600分），
但是亚裔要比白人同学平均还要高140分。310分差距应该是反映了对非洲裔学生的照顾
政策，但是140分差距则很难解释。
在过去二十年里亚裔的人口，特别是18岁到21岁年龄段人口（上图虚线）大幅增长，于
此对应的是，录取时不考虑种族因素的加州理工的亚裔学生比例也随之增长（和虚线伴
随增长的那条实线）。但是奇怪的是所有八所常春藤名校（其他八条实线）的亚裔比例
都被稳稳地控制在15%-20%区间，而这一切，据校方说，只是巧合！
昂茨没有停下来，他用大量数据揭示了一个很多人不清楚的事实：今天犹太裔学生学术
成绩的崩溃，如今犹太裔高中生的学术成绩不但远不如亚裔，连非犹太裔的白人学生也
不及。以下段落大家可以仔细阅读，其中数据实在惊人：哈佛大学录取的新生中45%是
白人，而犹太裔学生高达25%，也就是非犹太裔学生只有20%。而实际上只占总人口2.1%
的犹太裔学生的学术成绩不如非犹太裔的白人学生，离亚裔差得就更远了，但是他们占
了常春藤大蛋糕里最大的一份。
在昂茨看来，犹太裔学生学术成绩的崩溃是如此明显，你无论用哪个指标去衡量都一样
。原因呢？无他，新的一代犹太裔学生失去了父辈和祖父辈努力向上的动力，读到此处
不禁让人唏嘘，二战结束之后的那一代星光灿烂的犹太裔科学家，工程师，医生和律师
们，如果知道后辈如此不长进，不知道会有何感想。昂茨甚至不留情面地指出，要不是
苏联解体为犹太社团带来了一波勤奋好学的新犹太移民，犹太学生团体的平均学术成绩
还要更糟。
他极其伤感地指出：几十年前，当一流高中生中25%是犹太裔的情况下，犹太裔占据25%
的常春藤席位是非常合理的。如今犹太裔在一流高中生的比例已经跌到了6%，可是犹太
裔学生在常春藤大学中的比例还略有增加。
权力导致腐败，集中的权利尤甚。在学校很大程度上决定人命运的社会大背景下，常春

Consider the case of Tiffany Wang, a Chinese immigrant
student raised in the Silicon Valley area, where
her father worked as an engineer. Although English
was not her first language, her SAT scores were
over 100 points above the Wesleyan average, and she
ranked as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist,
putting her in the top 0.5 percent of high school students
(not the top 2 percent as Steinberg mistakenly
claims). Nevertheless, the admissions officer rated her
just so-so in academics, and seemed far more positively
impressed by her ethnic activism in the local
school’s Asian-American club. Ultimately, he stamped
her with a “Reject,” but later admitted to Steinberg that
she might have been admitted if he had been aware
of the enormous time and effort she had spent campaigning
against the death penalty, a political cause near and dear
to his own heart. Somehow I suspect
that a student who boasted of leadership in pro-death
penalty activism among his extracurriculars might
have fared rather worse in this process. And presumably
for similar reasons, Tiffany was also rejected by all
her other prestigious college choices, including Yale,
Penn, Duke, and Wellsley, an outcome which greatly
surprised and disappointed her immigrant father.88

The Asian ratio is 63 percent, slightly above
the white ratio of 61 percent, with both these figures
being considerably below parity due to the substantial
presence of under-represented racial minorities

be no evidence for racial bias against Asians, even
excluding the race-neutral impact of athletic recruitment,
legacy admissions, and geographical diversity.
However, if we separate out the Jewish students, their
ratio turns out to be 435 percent, while the residual ratio
for non-Jewish whites drops to just 28 percent, less
than half of even the Asian figure.
As a consequence,
Asians appear under-represented relative to Jews by
a factor of seven, while non-Jewish whites are by far
the most under-represented group of all, despite any
benefits they might receive from athletic, legacy, or
geographical distribution factors. The rest of the Ivy
League tends to follow a similar pattern, with the overall
Jewish ratio being 381 percent, the Asian figure at
62 percent, and the ratio for non-Jewish whites a low
35 percent, all relative to their number of high-ability
