the term is usually active ingredient, or API(active pharmaceutical
ingredient). That is why I am saying if one is not educated in the subject,
it is a waste of time to debate. in traditional chinese medicine,
different herbs are used in combination as supportive to each other to
balance the body, therefore curing diseases. that is probably why they say

there is one example of artemisia, can one conclude on all TCM herb
treatments? this method had been proved wrong on 黄连. when there
is no single "dominant factor" (could be the product of multiple
chemical compounds in the herbs), this concept fails.
in TCM, the different herbs are not mixed to suppress / support
each other then make a total effect to the body, but their
effects to the body balance each other. the body status (system state)
matters. this is the sys

我不知道你为什么一直拿个稻草人打。 没有人说一定是"single" 决定因素。
但很可能是small subset. 至于你说的一万种因素，都有用，非要靠全集，
我当然不同意。事实证明了，很多植株药物有效成分是少数几种。
