•Perform research on the use of high performance materials in bridge
structural elements.
•Develop experimental designs and instrumentation plans, and perform
experiments on large scale structural elements.
•Collect and analyze experimental data using a variety of conventional
and advanced sensors and data acquisition systems.
•Perform finite element modeling (FEM) of a variety of structural
elements and systems, including concrete, steel and composites.
•Compare theoretical behavior of structural elements and systems
predicted by FEM with experimental data.
•Perform forensic investigation of bridges including experimental and
analytical studies.
•Prepare high quality research reports.
•Write technical papers for publication in respected refereed journals
.
•Make presentations at national conferences and symposia.
•Actively participate in professional and technical organizations.
•Mentor and train junior staff professionals.
Requirements include:
•At least an M.S. degree in civil engineering with specialization in
structures is required.
•A Ph.D. degree with specialization in structures is desirable.
•Related research, structures and bridge engineering experience is
desirable.
•Background and experience in the fatigue and fracture of steel
bridges is highly desirable.
•Experience with FEM program ABAQUS is highly desirable.
•Good communication skills, as demonstrated by publication of papers
and presentation at conferences, are required.
•Ability to work in a team environment is essential.
•Professional engineer (PE) license is desirable.
•Understanding and knowledge of AASHTO Code related to design and
construction of bridges is required.
The positions are based at our Herndon, VA location.
